Power Steering Vs. Manual Steering

I have a 96 civic dx hatch lowered on h&r race and kyb agx with roughly a 2.25" drop or so.

Which way would I get better control?

HamiltonsIsuzu 12-Mar-2006 11:36 AM

manual steering.

imported_QRTR 12-Mar-2006 12:42 PM

I prefer the steering feel of a manual rack , plus it frees up
more hp...

imported_mikepasini 12-Mar-2006 02:57 PM

is that a fact or a myth?

imported_QRTR 12-Mar-2006 03:21 PM

its a fact...

Nova_Dust 12-Mar-2006 03:32 PM

I am going to convert my PS rack to a Non-PS rack. See how that feels. PS rack without belt + clutch LSD is just a nightmare at low speed. I love my car, but that is pure hell.

imported_QRTR 12-Mar-2006 03:36 PM

At first , but you'll get use to it Charles ...:D

The Prophet 12-Mar-2006 03:39 PM

is taking the belt off of PS harmful?

imported_mikepasini 12-Mar-2006 05:10 PM

nope... not at all, just pop it out... it will spit a bit of stuff out and might make a little mess in the engine bay, but thats about it... when u want it back, just put the belt back on... no harm done... i am doing it soon to try.

but, as far as i know, there is only one rack for eks... whether it is ps or non ps... just when u have ps it is just assisted steering rather than full power...

remember, there is a difference from power steering and hydraulically assisted rack and pinion (what those civics had)...

like the 2006s, the regular trims has hydro-assisted, but the si has electronic power steering... its different... an electronic steering rack... when you have no power... forget about it... but with other civics... it shouldn't be different than a reg rack and pinion steering rack...

any input?

Pimpin-EL 13-Mar-2006 01:54 PM

any1 have a diagram of wat needs to be taken off???

Nova_Dust 13-Mar-2006 02:04 PM

Honda-Tech has a couple threads on power steering removal. I have the threads saved at home, though.

AFAIK, EK PS and Non-PS are different racks. I have the Non-PS rack that I bought and I don't recall seeing the 2 openings that the fluids circulate on a PS rack.

Double_B 13-Mar-2006 02:10 PM

I have had my ps belt removed, it has been two weeks and no problems. I was also told the VX rack(which is already a manual steer) can be used in place of the one in the EK if need be.

Nova_Dust 13-Mar-2006 02:13 PM

So 5th gen VX can be used on a 6th gen? That can bring down the cost of parts.

imported_mikepasini 13-Mar-2006 10:35 PM

does the vx have a tighter steering ratio than the others?

and what i mean by the ek non ps and ps racks being the same is that they should yield the same feel as with or without the power steering... sure the ps has lines for the fluid, that makes sense... but normally hyrdraulically assisted stuff in cars and in big machines is all designed around the core manual operation structure of an object so it is normally the same as a manually operated one... i dunno, if there is a diff 100% then i will just buy a new rack then...

frees up a whole 2 ponies i bet

i find manual steering fun yet more dangerous, especially if you hit dips in the road and you dont have 2 hands on the wheel, because your car will pull right into them

when i do my swap im keeping the power steering.

imported_Team Rukus 14-Mar-2006 12:00 AM

only ctr has a shorter turning radius.
all the other ones are the same.
i believe the sir has a slightly better rack aswell
