#215 i think...was first thing this morning..

agreed, replying with dumb-*** comments on a petition that we expect to be taken seriously ain't gonna do us any good..

just leave the comments section blank guys if yer having trouble controlling your anger..doing otherwise would merely re-enforce their views of "us"..

Hon. xxxxx,
xxxxx Ontario

Re: Concerns Over Bill 241 - Road Safety Act, 2002

Dear Mr. xxxxx,

I, as a responsible automotive enthusiasts, support the government's initiative to provide increased safety to all Ontarians on our roads, and believe strongly that the government has introduced a generally good and well intentioned piece of legislation, but a piece of legislation that needs change in the means by which it proposes to stem illegal street racing.

I believe, as your government and the public at large does, that street racing in the province is a problem that needs a set of rational enforcement and penalty solutions to combat. However, I believe that the provisions of proposed Part X, section 172.2 are unjust, unfair and do not penalize the illegal racers, but instead burdens and hurts responsible, law abiding hobbyists, amateur and semi-professional, legal, track using race drivers and owners, as well as the already financially weakened and sparse race track facilities that exist in our province.

From an economic standpoint, this proposal will hurt legitimate local, national, and international equipment and automotive sales and service businesses, and a multi-billion dollar per year parts manufacturing industry that includes divisions of the all of the large domestic and import automobile manufacturers, as well as our own local, smaller custom parts and equipment makers. All of this translates into lost business revenues, lost jobs and lost tax revenues that the province could use to effectively combat the real problem.

This bill as it stands may in fact push more people into the illegal, unsafe and reprehensible act of street racing, as the track facilities the law abiding individual could go to risk closing for lack of business, and force them to seek their currently legitimate activities in illegal ways. In the end, the only things lost are the safety of the people of Ontario, and the enjoyment and freedom of legitimate, law abiding, safe hobbyists and users of the equipment. In much the same way as unintended marine life such as dolphins are killed in wide ****** gill nets for the goal of catching the desired species, this section of the proposed legislation will destroy innocent and responsible users enjoyment of their property, and the livelihoods of sellers and makers of these products and services.

The banning of substances and equipment deemed to be racing equipment in order to combat street racing is of logic similar to banning solvents because a very small percentage of people who purchase them do so to inhale the fumes and die seeking some high or rush. I know that these substances and equipment deemed for racing are not in themselves unsafe, and in fact are as often as not better made than the original equipment they replace or add on to. It is the very small portion of the population that uses otherwise safe equipment illegally that is the problem. Let's not have another Kyoto scenario here please. Let us gather and make aware the truth before implementing an act that will solve nothing.

I ask you, and your cabinet to review the goals of section 172.2 under the Bill, and are sure you will find that this clause will not stop street racing, but can only hurt those who use the products legally and safely. Enforcement and penalty for those illegally street racing is the only fair and just solution. Elimination of a broadly loved, and safe pastime is not.

I ask then that Part X, Section 172.2 of the proposed Road Safety Act, 2002 be removed from the legislation, and suggest that to achieve the goal of reducing or eliminating illegal street racing, that more targeted enforcement and penalties for illegal activities be this section's replacement.

I take this opportunity to thank you for your attention to my concerns, and look forward to having an opportunity to work with the government to enact fair legislation that improves road safety for all Ontarians, while not impinging on legitimate and reasonable activities of automotive enthusiasts.

Sincerely,

Thanks again for all the support guys, but remember that signing the petition is only the first step. If you love your car, if you enjoy your freedom to customize as you see fit, be it for show or for go, you need to send a letter to your MPP.

If you follow this Government Link, or the links to the bill on the supraforum site you will see a members tab at the top of the page. From that, you can get your MPP's address locally and in Toronto, and their email. The Premier, the Minsiter of Transport and the leaders of the opposition (Dalton McGuinty and Howard Hampton).

As Si Veloz has been kind enough to put up a letter for you, all that is needed is to fill in the appropriate name and send it away, or to make the letter more impactful and personal, change it around a little so it does not appear to be a form letter, (after they get a few) and please remember that giving a little respect to the target carries a lot of weight. This is a person going to read it at the other end, not a machine.

Thanks again for supporting the hobby we all love. Your letters are read (they have to, by law, read and respond to each letter), and mean a great deal to those of us who enjoy the privilege of driving personalized and modified cars.

i've sent off to both leaders of the opposition as well as my local..

wondering what mag's have been contacted, letters to the editor of the many papers etc??
someone with a pleasant demeanor/proven ethical approach and the facts might wanna do so??

just thinking, this is gonna affect not just us but the many other enthusiasts (old chevy's, fords, p'u trucks, Harley's etc etc..)..
more public awareness of our plight might go a long way..yet overkill might damper the effects.......

any idea where things sit Pearly??

There is another Toronto Supra Club member that is doing mailings and press packs to various news agencies, papers and radio stations to increase awareness of the ban and our position, and I have been hitting every club and forum I can find on the web that has any ontario basis. I've been trying to get ahold of a couple of the regional Mustang and Corvette clubs, the Viper club, the porsche owners group and a few others. I have also been going through modracer.com to email every shop in the listing that has an email addy to get the word out there. Import wise, Civics, Supras, MR2's, celicas, BMW, Preludes, Accords, the RX7 club, and a few others that I'm too tired right now to remember have been contacted, and I await replies from many of them. I have to work on some of the other off brand smaller (neons, cavaliers, protege's etc) compact car clubs, but all in good time. The muscle car crowd is tougher to crack into as many of the good ol boys with the big old toys just don't have the organization due to small numbers ****** out all over. For them I have been working on the hot rod and domestic performance shops. I still have to get to the race tracks, but they are on the list for the morning.

Thanks again for keeping up strong!

Bob

Signed #22, and letter to my MP...but now I'm gonna send some more letters out to the minister, and the head of the opposition party, and the premier. So much time wasted since someone had a brain fart and thought of this silly, silly bill.

Here's an idea....why don't we invite the local MP for the KC area to come out to our meet to chat with us. Not to boo them, but to explain our side of things and to put a face to the true enthusiasts. Let them know us and what we are about...
The same thing should be done for a Friday Westend meet.

We really need to let our own local MPs know how we feel too.

If we sit back and wait....we are leaving decisions to be made by others...others that may not know all the facts.

just my 2 cents
