welcome to tcc..

and no it is NOT normal for it to grind, the seller is just trying to sell it to you.. with that being said I wouldn't trust anything else he says so do not buy his car, I bet a ton of things are wrong with it..

and yes it would be costly to fix it

LoL oh ya, WELCOME by the way..... but gears are never meant to be grinded, it could be a common problem for him, as he could have only done shiiityi installs with shiity parts... but they are not suppoesd to be like that all, what tranny would u be getting with it anyways do u know? is it a GSR tranny? but even still u are getting an okay deal, if the car is in good condition, if u look at it a an EG hatch in good condition with a D-series engine go for 800-2500, and a GSR swap minus tranny because tranny is ****ty if its grinding i would say 2g'ish , (ppl correct me if i m wrong) plus install say $500, so you would be roughly around say 3500 at minmum basically. sayin the car is in pretty bad condition, so if its in good condition... its worth more, so offer him 4G flat... also does this car come with rims, stereo etc. those are all $$$

i also saw u posted was it abused! thats hard to say, yes and no, yes because he did put a more powerful engine in, and no because he could have been a sh*tty driver... so its hard to say...

good luck with ur buy

No its not common for a tranny to grind.... But yes it is a common problem on B Series trannies that the third gear grinds. Doesn't mean that there's nothing wrong with that though cause a grind is still a grind .... Buy it and buy a new tranny simple as that.

Most likely Syncros..or the clutch..I betcha is the synchro..usually it is the 3rd gear synchro that goes first..and 5th...Synchros go for $300 and change..and installing it is time-consuming, so your prolly gonna get charged a full day labour on it. Take care.

thanks for all the help.... it was a stupid q to ask if ginding is normal. I had a 5g lude and never any problems. I have been in the market for a new car latley something faster, and most of the civics for sale in forums with mtr swaps are "Bxx and No Grind" thats why i asked if it was a common thing. The car it self is in good condition about 170 kms on body, 120kms on mtr. Has not seen winter in the last 4 yrs, he has not driven it in 2 yrs due to high insurance beeing involved with accidents(not with the civic), and not working. I have seen the recipts it was installed by RT mtr sports (not heard anything bad about them, correct me if i'm wrong pls) in woodbride back in 2002 w/b18c1 tranny as noted on recipt, paid like 6'gs for install.

Just worried about the trans! Are GSR trans strong, when I took it for a rip it did not grind for me, but as i was driving he said "be careful about 3ed it grinds, its common for civics with swaps" then i was kinda worried. I think its a good deal. just dont want to buy it ,then the trans falls out know what i mean!

well, first of all, he did told you 3rd gear grinds (so he wasn't hiding that fact), then he said its normal (so he was trying to trick you like you're stupid). there could be million of other problems, but again, if the motor is really done by RT motorsports, it shouldn't be a crappy swap, but the swap is 2 years ago, that means he could've been ripping the car pretty bad in these 2 years... and when the body is mint or decent for its age, double check thoroughly to make sure there's no ****ty bondo then cover up with CDN TIRE oem paint...

offer him $500 less to compensate for the grind...
then also make a condition how you want a mechanic to see the car... if the seller has nothing to hide, he would not act like "oh i'm busy" and ****... if he says no you can't check it and either you like it or not and insist you're wasting time, then make him an offer 50% of what he's asking for... tell him he's wasting your time now, ask him if he will take 2G or not and **** off! haha....

seriously, i don't care what swap he's got, if he's acting like a jerk, the car must be **** up!
