Why does one need a _fast_ winter beater ?

IMHO, the fastest winter beater is one with AWD and snow tires. You should have seen the Mustangs and F-bodies I passed when I was driving my POS Mazda 323 !

But those are kind of expensive. My pick would be the 3 series.

My thoughts exactly. Isn't the point of a winter beater just to get around in the snow while your ride is keeping safe? If you look at it in the broad sense no car is fast in the winter anyway because you still need to drive close to the pace of everyone else to keep things safe. just my opinion though.

Get a Suburu WRX or Mits Lancer Evo VIII.

They're FASTTTTTTTTTTTTTT, and they're all wheel drive...
however.. they aren't cheap.
