My First Civic..What should i do..

I just picked up a 90 civic hatchback for 200 bucks. No motor and the body is in good shape.

My plan is to take it up to school with me in may..get it looking good and at the same time. Build up a d-series motor in the basement..turbo it and so on.

Are there any important things I should know about?. This is my first civic and so i want to do everything right.

Heres a picture if anyone wants to see it, http://www.createforum.com/areader/t...c/IMG_2140.jpg

Hood has been changed.

yeah just get a stock engine and drive it till it dies. I learned the hard way but they are a waste of money... save for a house or something that adds net worth

Your in for a long ride.

What is your budget first of all

kruption 15-Apr-2008 10:45 PM

Make sure the thing is safe for the road before anything, suspension etc. I'd just throw in a d16 with and SI tranny for starters if you're hard on cash.

Posting a budget would help.

i dunno..right now id say a grand..i managed to get a d-series motor off my buddy who took it out of it 98 civic si and hes also giving the tranny, brand new exedy clutch, ecu and header for 300 bucks. motor runs and everything just wants to get rid of it...then im hopin on building the motor up over the summer and putting a turbo on. Dont really have the cash for one of those gsr motors or b18

which one is more expensive if done right? :eyebrows:

Solisman 16-Apr-2008 09:25 AM

putting a turbo in is easier said than done. It's also very expensive to do properly.

you're probably better off getting this car running for as little as possible then save up for the engine swap rather than a turbo.

hey, u may run into some problems butting the 98 si engine in your civic because the 98 is obd2 and has a hydrolic clutch.(i think) 300 dollars is a good price but u may just be better off picking up a used dohc zc and a older tranny. Than in the future you could always turbo the zc which is pretty good with turbo.

The tranny is the biggest issue he'll have...

the car could be converted to OBD2 (lots of work, or an expensive conversion harness)...or he could just use the existing intake manifold and wiring (it all bolts up)...if he has an Si he's in great shape, a DX would be more work (MPFI swap)...he'll only lose a couple of HP not using the Y8 manifold (all of this is 'I think' its been a while since I've played with this stuff)

Soo would it be better to just get a ZC motor? or should i still stick with the 98 si motor..im still new to all these different engines. Heres an easy question

Which motor requires minimum to no work at all with swapping. By that i mean changeing around basicly everything like what was said above. Also i want to turbo the car so the engine needs to be good when turbo'd.

JDMinprogress 16-Apr-2008 06:25 PM

you're going to have to get a tranny thats cable.
hydrolic tranny is going to be too much work as said before by viper, and its going to be costly.
go with the ZC motor.

That motor will go in there no problem (and mate up with most D series transmissions)...

the only thing with ZCs is they are all really old...

and if you have that one, find a cheap D series transmission (preferably Si, but if your desperate a DX one will do), keep the intake you have now (if its an Si, your gold if not, meh), and you'll be running and can upgrade as you have time/money...
