my '97 civic CX has no power steering...is this normal?

I recently purchased a '97 Civic CX which I know nothing about (other than it was in good condition, from an original owner). It however has no power steering. There is no power steering pump under the hood either. Was power steering an option on base model CX's for the 97 model year? Is it easy to add power steering?

Thanks,

I believe that is how all CX Civics came. No ps.

CX's didn't come with power steering...

you didn't notice when you were driving it? lol

It's not worth you adding power-steering to a 10 (turning 11) year old car..

anything is possible if you have enough $$ to throw at it...

i definitely noticed the lack of power steering on my initial test drive. it didn't bother me at first, but now it is becoming a bit of a annoyance when doing low speed sharp manuvering around my driveway and such. i figure if i grabbed the necesasary belts, and pump it may be a DIY job, but i suppose the actual steering rack is different too? has anyone here successfully added it to their cx?

With a DX power steering rack, proper lines and the pump, you should be able to convert it to PS.

There are a lot of people that want a non PS rack, you should be able to sell yours very easily.

Chris! Had a feeling I would see you here.
Just picture a run-of-the-mill 6th gen EJ hatch with your ususal honda rear fender rust.
The body is in rough shape compared to what I am used to...I plan on doing a DIY paint job eventually. I see that you are attempting yours soon? Who is gonna do the spraying?

you should be able to get used to the non-ps behaviour.. you'll have to learn to roll-and-turn more than before. Turning the wheel at a dead stop is bad for your tires anyway

I autox with my CX and have no ps... just work out those fore-arms !

same shop that did it the first time and screwed it up..they owe me a free one.. only thing im paying for this time around is a clearcoat..after that im letting the car rot into the ground..

good luck with the diy job... the only thing i found out with diy is that i found the car had more rot than i initially imagined =/

Yes thats normal the cx is the basement model of an already cheap car. If u added pwr steering, the engine might not be able to cope with the load.

Engine is the same in CX and DX, so i don't see how the power steering would care which car its in...

CX's did not have PS as a factory option. A lot of them were ordered with PS as an addition. My GF's 94 CX has PS.

PS swap is easy.
I just ended up getting a whole front end off a DC - engine included - and so I just swapped it all in. Not hard - but not an afternoon job.
I used to dread driving my CX.. I'm much happier with PS.
