My 91 Si Project

Hey guys, I just bought a 91 Si EF hatch for $500 and there is rust and the paint is really faded but the motor, suspension and interior is good. I was planning on doing a Arctic camoflauge paintjob kinda like this:

The paint is all gonna be done by rattle can but before I start I wanna just make sure that I got everything "down pat".

1) Do all little dents, chips etc with Bondo, smoothen it as much as I can then wait for it to dry and sand to a nice finish with 400 Grit
2) 4 step wetsand: 120,220,400 then last 600 Grit
3) Use Laquer Thinner and Terry cloths to get all the sanding dust off the car
4) Mask off/cover all the windows, lights, etc...
5) Spray the car everywhere with Primer
6) Spray the car all over white
7) Spray freehand different circular like shapes all over the car with gray and black
8) MAYBE clearcoat

Should I buy one of those electric orbital sanders like the DeWalt ones?
Does every step look ok?
Should I do the Arctic Camo or Flat black

If I buy Rota Slipstreams in Bronze or Dark Gray with 45 or 50 Profile and have the car slammed on some sleeves with like a 3.5" Drop...Its a $500 car so mine as well try it out....

Suggestions

Im dead serious!!! Another thing, Primer would be better to put on the car as my main spray right cause wouldnt regular spray paint start to flake off? And Primer would be like more of a flat color right? Cuase Im gonna get this done but Im debating whether I do the car in Arctic Camo or a Flat black, Flat Dark grey or like an Army green

the car will be lowered on sleeves and I want it to be sitting like the front of this car, not the rear though (Its too low) with those Rota's slips

120 grit? are you cracked?

Sand out the chips with 120 on a da, 220 hand sand dry. 2 part primer thick 2 coats on front of hood and filler peice. Do the rest of the car by hand/block wih 320 dry and then quick 600 by hand. 320 is okay. I suggest using a cheaper paint (not base clear) becuase it will hide scratches and sanding marks from body work areas.

Dont do it camo. Thats asking to get pulled over and is a so cal kinda thing. We live in ontario. Primer/flat black will look like *** in a few months. Do it right or dont do it at all. Spray paint cars loo like crap. For the money you will spend on rattle cans, $40 more at part source will buy you some paint and hardeners and soforth. They have kits for painting your own vehicle.

This should be in the Exterior / Appearance forum or DIY.

Anyway, for a 500 dollar car, I think you have the right idea. Your rims and rubber are going to be worth twice as much as the car, though...lol

Just research as much as you can about DIY paintjobs. It's not rocket science, but it was to be doneproperly if you want it to last.

I believe 'Brett' on TCC did an EF tear down and paint job himself. Try PMing him.

Is Tremclad good cause I was doing my research and they said it would be better to use Tremclad spray cause its nice and sticky like a PRIMER and comes with colors what do you mean by "Sand out the chips with 120 on a da, 220 hand sand dry. 2 part primer thick 2 coats on front of hood and filler peice"? DA as in Integra DA? And 2 part primer as in 1 light coat and then a second coat? im leaning towards Army Green, or a really dark flat gray...

As for the exhaust I think imma just do a straight pipe right out the right side, YES right side...suspension, Ebay coilovers on stock shocks (dont care about camber), and I need to fix the rear quarters cause they are rotted to ****. If I get the rear panels, who can weld them in for me??? Team_Rukus?????

I already have my 89 Si as a project car. I just wanna "spiff" it up a bit from that uglyass faded red paint, and slam it to the ground with some Rota's...As for the coilovers, it is safe cause Im not cutting the springs...

To shave the side, do I just take off the trim and fill iti in with bondo and sand it down?

no, no you dont
you take the mouldings off and tack weld a piece of metal in there, then smooth over it with fiberglass and a thin coat of bondo.

If you are going for that old military retro 50's type look with the whole rat rod type feel. Paint it grey and put a bomber style graphic on it. For example...

I think that would look fricking cool! And different!

Your gas tank hits the ground? Wow i didn't think your car looked nearly that low in the back!

btw i didn't paint my own car, just did the cutting and welding of new metal. There was another guy who did his own paint on a fourth gen, then crashed it right after. Can't remember his name though...
