Moving up to an SUV
#41
No, we haven't yet. We're just doing some research on it before we go to test drive and ask questions. That's why I'd like to get as much info as possible before we go. I don't want the salesman going "cha-ching!" when we walk into a dealership with no knowledge of what we're getting into lol.

Well, it looks like you have your heart set on one of those SUVs listed.
I would suggest, when going to the dealer, that you bring something big like golf clubs or a big empty box or a dog cage with you to give you a better persepective of the size inside the vehicle.
In my totally biased opinion, I would go with the CR-V. Why? Resale. I am going by your current car, the 2002 Civic that you will want to change cars in 5-7 years. The Jeep will have almost zero resale value and the X-Terra will have some but I bet it wouldn't be as good as the CR-V. Also, the CR-V probably has the best fuel efficiency of the three.
The X-Terra is built on a truck chassis (body on frame) so, it rides like one, it uses gas like one and inside is surprisingly tight considering the outside dimensions.
The Jeep Patriot, if I am not mistaken is Jeep's version of the Dodge Caliber...I don't think you can get a V-6 and it will feel awfully slow. The power rating is higher than the CR-V but it won't feel as quick. Of course the price is good but I am of the school of thought that you get what you pay for.
One more vehicle to add to the mix, how about the Toyota RAV4?
In the end, it is what you and your wife want and it's your decision.

The Jeep Compass is Jeep's version of the Dodge Caliber. The Jeep Patriot, you'd have to goodle what it is, but it's not the same as the caliber. The patriot has a front engine rwd/4wd based layout with the engine inline with the vehicle. The jeep compass has a transverse (sideways) mounted engine front wheel drive based layout (it's a car basically). the patriot is more truck or "jeep" like. Also I believe there is a 6 cylinder engine option for the Patriot.

Great idea. My neighbour with the XTerra has a german sheppard and his crate just fits into the back of the truck. That just leaves the back seats for whatever else.

I'm not sure. Just don't have the right feel for them. There are some really nice ones out on the market, but just don't have the feel for them.
Well, nothing's written in stone yet. It won't be until early next year that we'll buy one. By then, things/options will probably change. Those 3 listed are just our picks for now. The golf clubs/box trick is a great idea. After all, we will be traveling with 2 mutts. I know all about resale value in Honda. That's why we have 2 lol. We haven't looked at the RAV4 yet. From the look of it, it looks tiny compare to the ones on the list. I guess there's the 2 and 4 door version.
The Patriot comes in FWD or AWD. It only comes in 4 cylinders with 2.0 or 2.4 L. The Patriot is more roomier than the Compass. I like the design of the Compass tho.
We will definately take it out for a spin before we decide. Thanks!

Well, if you can wait until early next year. I would suggest to wait until the Auto Show and then make a decision. You can look at all the SUVs and compare.
Make a list of what to look for.
Make a list of needs and wants.
Of course bring the wife....
Who knows, she may lilke the new Element... The floor is very easy to clean of dog hair...
Auto Show is in February at the Metro Toronto Convetion Centre and Rogers Centre.
P.S. wear comfortable shoes when you go.

^Thanks!
I'm already planning on going with a few co-workers. Dunno if the wife wants to tag along. Maybe I'll bring some pictures home for her to see. A picture is worth a thousand words lol.
I also was looking at the VW Touareg 2. That's one pricey SUV. Starting at 45.

If this is going to be primarily the wife's vehicle, I would strongly recommend bringing her to the Auto Show. Maybe a different time than with your co-workers but I think the time investment to do all your final research in one place is well worth it. Yes, a picture is nice but actually seeing, feeling and understanding the size of vehilce is worth more than pictures...

I know this a Honda sit but Toyota makes a good suv My uncle has had rav 4's (on number 2 now) since they came out. Great SUV enough room good on gas, but i touch on the smaller side. But something to look into I would for sure stay with the Jap stuff DO NOT GO DOMESTIC.
