Motor storage
 

I bought a b16 fullswap off a buddy of mine but im not doing the swap in my car till the spring as im rebuilding the engine with new parts.

i need to know how to store the motor for the winter in a shed since my parents wont allow it in the garage. im thinking of putting it on a dolly and covering it with a tarp and putting paper towels in the throttle boddy and the headers.

i want to know which is the best way to store this thing as so that it dsent rot during the winter any ideas would be helpfull thnx

well... that sucks.. fill the oil right to the top of the vc. spray the whole block with wd-40 or some other lubricant...i'd say put like some old clothing in there rather than paper towels as they absorb more of the moisture, but leaving it in a shed is a recipe for disaster... is there any way ur buddy can hold onto it till u can do the swap?
i'd look into any possible alternative to storage before going through with it.......

hell... i'd even leave it in my room on some plywood..:p

cant wd40 just rust the **** out of the motor tho? like how do i keep the moisture and such away from it.

^wd40. The "wd" stands for Water-Displacement. Meaning it keeps water/moisture away. ;) Spray the whole engine with it. The head and block are aluminum, but it will still help prevent corrosion, none-the-less.

it will be fine in the cold. just spray it thoroughly with wd40 and cover it as you said with a tarp and such, and it will be fine. In the springtime, before you install it, make sure there's no critters or creatures in it ;).

be careful with covering it with anything plastic for it can create moisture and trap it in

lol buddy, it'll survive the cold, its all metal. not gunna get a cold.
BUT. as mentioned above, if u cover it with plastic it will trap in more moisture... cover it with a blanket or something similar... but filling it to the top with oil is important... you might see oil seeping through the valve cover gasket....thats when you know to stop. keeping the internals nicely lubricated is a must..once in a while just re spray the whole block with wd-40...say like once a week..
and dude. wd-40 repels water... and water is what leads to rust...=\

What?! i wouldnt even spray it with anything. To be honest, nothing will happen. No heaters are necessary, all you have to do is make sure it has oil in it and leave it be. The only possible issue that i see is coolant. If it was mixed with too much water it can freeze. So try to get all the coolant out of the block and leave it be. Then come spring, just turn it over by hand few times and guess what?! it will be just fine!
