method that thieves use

Apparently car thieves have yet again found a way around the system and steal your car or truck without any effort at all.

The car thieves peer through the windshield of your car or truck, write down the VIN number from the label on the dash, go into the local dealership for that car brand and request a duplicate key for it from the VIN number.

Car dealerships make up a duplicate key from the VIN number, collect payment from the 'customer' who's really a would-be car thief for making up the duplicate key -- the car thief goes back to your vehicle, inserts the key they've just gotten and off they drive with your car or truck.

They don't have to break in, don't have to damage the vehicle and draw no attention to themselves as all they have to do is to walk up to your car, insert the key and off they go to their chop shop with your vehicle!!!

Can you believe it?

To avoid this from happening to you, simply put opaque tape (like a strip of electrical tape, duct tape or medical tape) across the VIN label located on the dash board. You can't remove the VIN number legally under most state laws, so cover it so that it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car thief.

Also, to everyone... when you post pics of your hatches on the sites or on the forum or even if you're just uploading your pics to your online album... please blot your license plates out. This is also another method that thieves use to track you and get your car.

dealers should ask for PHOTO ID , so if your car goes missing the'll know who took it. they should also ask who the owner of the car is so the name matches the id card they show

Your car can get towed away by police if your VIN # is not visable. It's against the law to cover it up. My car almost got impounded for that.

I was at work when get this: i was pulled over while my car was parked in front of my workplace and i was working. That's right i was pulled over while no even driving or being anywhere near the vehicle. A stealth cruiser went behind my car and turned on the cherries while i was watching him from work. I didn't want to come out because my car was really low at the time and i didn't want ot talk to the cop. He goes around my car with a flash light and inspecting everything. He went back to his car, sat there for a good 20 minutes. Came out and started looking at the VIN which i had covered up. I remembered i covered it up so i ran out and he asked me if the car belongs to me. I said yes, and he told me he is calling in a Police tow truck and the car is going to the impound yard because he thought it was stolen. I said it's not, the car is mine, blah blah. After half an hour of arguying, checking the vin number on my dash, on my door jamb, on my firewall in the engine bay and writing down the serial # for my motor he let me go with a warning.

that's old, but most dealerships ask for your ownership as well as photo id and make copies of it before cutting the key....

All HONEST dealers ask for this info.

I've seen people put a paper napkin from Mickey D's over it, or a empty pack of cigs.

Personally I say that's bull ****... and even if it was true.. the dealership has monkeys with **** for brains working there.

They're suppose to ask for ownership before doing anything like that. THey just won't go along and cut keys. If that was the case... everybody's $150 000 Benz and BMW 745 would have gone missing by now... and shipped off to Columbia...

this happened to a friend of mine a few years ago
his car was stolen one nite and when the police found it the next day (sitting on the shoulder of the QEW) there were keys in the ignition
the thief had gotten keys made, and just taken the car for a joy ride

My friend just did this. He lost his key, walked right into Honda with his vin and got a new key. No questions, no I.D. , nothing. This is a huge problem and you cant trust the dealership is going to check up with everyone. Just cover it with a card so you can easily remove it of the cops get bitter.

I have done this myself, but that's becuse I've been going to the same dealer for 2 years, and they know me and my car.

I saw another guy come in once and ask to get a key made, (lookd like a punk), and wanted to get a key made for a new SIR. Parts guys asked for ID/ownership and something else (I think the wanted to know where he bought the car), the guy said the papers was in the car, and that he had bought the car in Montreal. They told him..."no papers....no key". The guy kinda got pissed and walked out. If it was a car thief, he'll just contiue onto another dealer......I bet he will eventualy find one that will do it for him. Shame.

Friend in parts told me that almost EVERYDAY, he get's 1 or 2 people trying to get keys made without the nessesary paper work.

Be careful everyone.....all it takes is one time, and your baby will be gone.

I WISH HONDA WOULD CRACK DOWN ON THIS KINDA ****!!!!

There is a way to fuqk over a thief (or at least slow him down).......get an extra set of locks from a scapped car, and change them. Doors and trunck/hatch. Might be a bit of a pain to have different keys for the door and ignition, but I think it would be a BIGGER pain to find out your car is gone.

My 2C's.....
