Infiniti G35

I had this car for the weekend. So much has been written about it on BMW boards and ClubSi, I thought I'd add my two cents here.

Looks are my cup of tea: stylish, good attention to detail, good accoutrements. Handling was also very good, with Brembo brakes (recalled?) handling hard stops easily (nose dive, though).

Engine? For some reason, I enjoyed the pickup and power of the sedan better. Engine was a little rough, and did not seem near to equal its stated 280 horsepower.

It has a lot in common with the sedan and the 350Z, both of which I have driven extensively.

Worth the cost? If you are in love with the considerable style...

Would I trade my BMW for it (I know quite a few BMW owners who have). Not in a million years! Although abviously biased, the BMW beats it on so many counts -- starts with the magnficent inline 6 and ends with amazing balance; unless you have lengthy experience with it, it's hard to describe). The G35 is a well-made, stylish car. That's all, I'm afraid.

As I get a 'deal' from Nissan, I could have purchased a new Coupe for a lot less than my BMW. I am gald I waited, tested the BMW many times, and made a 'driver's' decision...

I agree with Audiophillia on this one(Yes I did take this one for a full test drive). I noticed that the brakes were good but a bit rough(I was quietly told by someone on the inside that they use Maxima rotors and pads for the sedan). I agree that the acceleration matches the Maxima. Handling seems softer than BMW's(am I right?)

The only thing that this car beats BMW is in power and a few creature comforts. Other than that, the BMW's are much better. Heck I even like Maxima's better with their solid rear axle. Ha Ha.

Actually, I thought the 350Z and G35 Coupe handling was near my BMW, tho not the driving 'balance'. I thought the my BMW's acceleration, though not as powerful in horses or torque as the Infiniti, felt much smoother and gave the impression of near equal power. Weird! I would not trade engines, let's put it that way...The sedan I thought much better in smoothness. Maybe I caught the Coupe on a bad weekend. Drove that baby hard...

I like the Nissan offering (well, Infinity I guess), but I'm more partial to Toyota's products... and if Honda were to ... say, build a RWD coupe platform, I would likely be drawn to it. There is just a little something about Nissan that makes me hesitant.... maybe their long history of electrical failures in the mid-late 80s is still fresh in my mind.

I know what you mean about being hesistant to get a Nissan product. From what I have seen their quality control and build quality do not seem on par with the likes of Toyota/Lexus or Honda/Acura, based on my test drives of a few new Nissan models not that long ago (Sentra SE-R and Altima). I've also heard of at least one major recall, common engine problems (ie. the cat self destructing and getting sucked back into the motor ), not to mention problems in the past, and quality control issues recently from Nissan/Infiniti owners.

Don't get me wrong, I think the G35 is really nice car (good power, features, etc.), but based on my recent experiences with other Nissan products, I would think twice.

I love the styling of the coupe, but not the sedan. I think that the sedan looks too tall for some reason... I'm sure that that equals good head room though.

Since I've never driven one, I can't comment on how it drives, but you can't lose with a car with 280hp linked to a 6-speed manual!!

From what I've read about it, however, it does seem that it's worthy of winning 2003 Motor Trend Car of the Year!

The G35 sedan starts around $40,000, I would assume the coupe starts just slightly higher. Both model G35's are based off the same platform and engine as the 350Z, but in the G35 the power output is slightly less (260hp on the sedan and 275 on the coupe if I remember correctly). I believe the G35 coupe also has the Brembo brake option like the 350Z.

There will also be an AWD G35 sedan coming out shortly.
