I may be ripped off.
I recently got a set of winter tires put on my OEM rims by a shop (not a TCC affiliate) who quoted me $50 on the phone if I paid cash. I showed up and he then said that since it's alloys and not steelies, he was gonna charge me $80 instead. I said I only bought with me the 50 he quoted me on, but I said that maybe I an extra $5 in change in my car if he can do it for $55. He said okay and as he was about to finish, I realized that he only balanced the front wheels only and left the rear ones not balanced. I told him that shouldn't all four tires be balanced since I will have to rotate them next year, he said that I will have to bring it in for balancing then. Is this a coy way for him to make up the difference since he will prolly charge me the next time I rotate my winter tires. Does this happened often for you guys that the shop only balance 2 tires instead of all 4?
If you guys want the name of the shop, I'll give it out so that people won't be ripped off like I did.

Isnt is against the law for a shop to mount tires and not balance them?
Im not saying theyre supposed to balance for free.
Thats at the customers cost.
But its a safety issue. Unbalanced wheels can cause wheel wobble and un-even roll.

do your alloy wheels need the stick weights? most shops quote their prices based on steelies and the normal weights...and charge extra for the stick ones (ive done the tire swaps many times haha)
i wouldnt say you're getting ripped off, 80 is fair..not too good, not too bad...but i would have had a problem with the balancing of only 2 wheels.

Yeah, when I asked him if the back ones are balanced, he said that rear wheels don't need to be, but it's required for the fronts. It takes the stick weights, not the clips. I should've taken it to John Lo's shop cause he quoted me 60. I thought I was getting a deal for 50. Oh well, I learn that you can't go cheap if you want it done right the first time.

well 80 is regular price... but i know most shops charges about 15$ per alloy (mount and balance) and about 50 for steelies....
for 80, you're not getting rip off, just not getting a deal

shoudnl't make a difference between alloys and steelies, mounting is moutning
that guy just played you for a fool
and if he didn't balance them take it back and tlel him to balance them, he can't just say $50 and then change the price on you last minute

he basically gave you a price under the assumption your car had steelies (which would make sense since it is winter) and because you failed to mention it over the phone and because again it is a PHONE estimate its hard to tell you the actual price. once you got there he told you it would be 80 and you told him you had only 50. he did not do the work and then tell you 80 which states you could've refused and gone somewhere else. basically he gave you a 50 dollar job for the 50 you paid him. he should've told you that he wont balance the other two for 50. realisically speaking he did the 50 dollar job that his shop provides for the 50 he took. there is absolutely nothing you can do however you can go back and pay the rest to get the rest of the work done.

*shrugs well it wasn't a total rip off... it's partially your fault for not clarifying what you'd get for the $55 when you 'renegotiated' the new price...
make sure you always clarify everything before you get ppl to start working on your car... did you really think he was gonna cut you a $25 break just cuz he's a nice guy??
