how often are you supposed to do emissions??
I was under the impression that it was every 2 years. However i bought my car in 2006 , i dint have to do it in 2007 , now 2008 i get the renewel notice of my license and it seems like i dont have to do it this year either. It says 2009 ... I m happy about that , but i am just a little curious if it changed ? .. my car is year 2000 .

i think as a rule its supposed to be done every year, but i usually buy two year plate tags so i don't have to do the emmisions, but i think everytime you go to get your tag renewed if your prevoius emmisions is still valid i.e out of 12 months 2 are left and you got to get a renewal for two year you basically won't have to do emmision till the next renewal.
so lets say you bought your car in 2006 Aug had the tags till jan 2008 2 year tags, and you did your emmission Aug 2006. then in 2008 you got the renewal anyway because your emissions was still valid till Aug. as you said the emmisions would last the 2 year, but i have always had emission covered only for 1 year, so im guessing you got lucky or have a newer car or that the government allows maximum 2 years stretch for emmisons to be done, and your timing was just perfect to get 3 years out.lol

I m not complaining because i been driving my car for two years with the engine light on so i was getting worry on how i was going to pass the emission test this year, but i was just curious to know if they change the years for emission test

i always thought that it was odd year even car, even year odd car, meaning, since its 2008 all cars with the model year ending with an odd number need emissions.
My car is a 1995 civic coupe, i need an emission test this year before the end of august, (the month of your birthday, mine's august) to renew my stickers. The wifes car also needs an etest this year (1995 civic hatch).
So, your car need an etest every 2 years, OR if you are transferring the ownership.

I think how you got away with going so long is b/c you bought your car in 2006, so it needed an etest to go into your name. Etests are however valid for a year, so when it came time for your renewal (your birthday month) in 2007 it must NOT have been a full 12 months since you bought your car, so your etest was still valid.

For the post before yours. I think you are right , i was so sure i was supposed to do my emission test last year but it never happened.

funny thing is that i think my sister may get away with it too . She bought the car last year in june 2007 (her car is a 2001 civic) and now she got the renewel letter and it says she can do it for 2 years, so basicly until the end of 2009.

Drive Clean is based on the year of your car, but is not required for the first 5 years (used to be 3). And then once your car is 5 years old (and beyond) you have to be tested every 2 years. A car does however need to be tested as part of transferring title no matter how old the car is.
The e-test is good for 1 full year. so if you transfer title 4 months before the time your car needed an e-test it would not require another one and you will need to have it tested 2 years from then.
