How did you learn?

Well I hope im not going to get flamed...

How did you learn how to drive stick? Im going to buy a civic soon, and I was just wondering where and how did you guys learn? In theory I know how to, but I just never have in a car. I was thinking of renting some garbage car and just go mess around in a parking lot till I get it down. Any suggestions?

on my dads car with his help...

if you buy one you can probably figure it relatively easily...

or get a friend or something, thats the best way, I've taught a few people on my car...

I had an auto car, swapped in a 5spd tranny, then when I was done I drove it. I had no one to teach me. I knew the procedure of doing things, and if you dont, just google it. Then just practice. You won't be good right away. I had a crappy IACV which wasn't helping me either lol.

At first I suggest just put it into first gear, and let the clutch out until you feel it grab, then depress it. Do that a few times, until you get a good feel of where the point is. After that, try letting out the clutch completely, in first gear, without adding gas. You'll have to do it SLOWLY.

When you can do that, start to release in first gear, and add some gas. Then eventually shift to second, and after that your golden.

On hills, try using the parking brake. It'll help a lot.

i learned on a buddys car (old POS accord). He used to let me take the car by myself so i could learn.....IMO thats the best way of doing it, by yourself, instead of having someone try to tell you what to do and getting all frustrated.

My dad tried to teach me but he's the worst teacher so I told him to buzz off and bought my own civic. I learned how to drive in the parking lot while test driving it lol

lol! I have seen someone out there on the roads trying to learn to drive stick, and honestly, I was pissing my self laughing it was so funny. I saw the guy stall his car like 3 times, and squeal the tires at least 5 times, and this was all in a matter of one block.

I learned by watching my dad drive for years.. then jumped in his truck and took it for a spin one day. but learning on a honda is alot better then a huge truck.

I knew the theory, so I taught my brother to drive stick when he was 15 and I was 12 LOL... then I drove it too. A couple of years later I bought a 84 accord hatchback, stick... so I drove that a bit as well... once I had my license, my first stick car was my new-at-the-time 98 Civic, I was 17 yrs old. went to the dealer and picked it up, drove it home.

my buddy also bought his new 99 protege and drove it home w/o ever driving stick before.

best tip I can give you, when you practice.... do this for about 15 minutes... sit there in first gear in a parking lot, put your right foot on the floor (away from the gas) and with your left foot practice easing the clutch out and getting the car to crawl w/o ever touching the gas. once you have that down to a science, you're a pro driver.

One of my very first job's was at a Ziebart. I told them I could drive a stick when I started, but I had only driven a g/f's 5sp Prelude a few times.

So I guess you can say I "learned" on all the dealer's new car's that Ziebart rustproofed.

i was house sitting for my uncle and he gave me his keys after a 20 minute lesson... had my own car for a week.

all i had to do was get the mail, feed the dog, walk the dog, give the stupid hamster water, and clean up after a few house parties.

I bought my car without knowing how to drive stick. My first time drive stick was out of a shop. I stalled the car 3 time trying to back it off the hoist. them my dad got pissed and told me to get out, lol. the next week i did it agian, just with out stalling it. i just drove around the shop getting use to up shifting, and down shifting. and stoping, lol. The thing i found most hard was to learn how to take off on a hill, Man was that fun, lol.

You will do fine.
