How is the Civic in the snow?

I need a beater, so I'm looking at Civics. How good are they in the snow and ice with a set of good winter tires?

1987 CRX

Excellent winter project, drivable, silver, engine 140,000 km, body 320,000 km, good cond., amp & boom box. $600

1989 Civic

Auto., runs well. 231,000 km. Sold as is. $580 obo

1987 Prelude

4 cyl., fuel efficient, auto., blue ext. on blue int. Needs some body work. Drives great motor, trans. in good cond. Factory roof. Low mileage. As is. Asking $599. 165,400 km

Which one do you guys think would be the best one to get?

Are there any serious or minor problems I should be aware with these cars?

the prelude would be better cause its much heavier....

but i have a 93 civic hatch and last two winters weren't that bad.... this will be my first being both lowered and using snow tires so hopefully its better

i've only got stuck once... it was last winter and i had very low tread on toyo proxies.... so i guess i had it coming

Your gonna get stuck this winter punk. You got my old springs. I got stuck a few times.

Civics aren't half bad winter beaters.

if i get stuck it'll be because someone rear ended me and i'm in a ditch.... but i have the front end raised a bit so its not nearly as low as it was.... that and snow tires should'nt be to bad

personalli Id be scared to drive a CRX in the winter, to me its a death trap... the 89 civic is ok in the winter, put some good tires on, and it wont get stuck, they are just allittle shakey on snowy highways... Personally I would go with the Lude, altho those old B20s are probably the worst engins honda ever built...but on the same note, saying its the worst is compareing to honda high standards, its still better than any domestic engine, and will still be reliable...

choose between the lude and civic, If you want maximum reliability go with the civic, if you want a heavier car, that "I think" would be better in the snow go with the lude (maybe somone here has used one in the winter and can say otherwise)...It also probably has more comfort options...

Just drive slow and break in advance. Any car will do the job.

I hope you mean "brake" instead of "break".

FWD and some snow tires! You're set!

All season tires will get the job done too, but snow tires would be better.

my moms 2000 4 door with nordic icetracks can plow through anything...when i use to drive it i helped 2 SUV's get out of a sloped parking lot and then i got into my moms car and just went through it like nothing.

yes, they're great. In deep snow I would just pump the gas and the tires would dig me out of all the snow in school parking lots, etc.

haha.. a friend of mine just bought a 240sx from florida as his beater. Im not peronsally happy with my civic in winter conditions so far. Then again, im used to driving SUV's and trucks, this is the first car ive owned/driven in winter that doesnt have ABS or any of that standard nowadays jazz.. its different.
