Help: Thinking of buying, opinion needed!

Hi Guys,
Need your opinion on what this civic is worth as I've never owned one modded. I have personally seen the car. Its got small paint peeling off but overall nice looking car. The JDM GSR motor has approx 60000+ kms on it but not verifiable as it is JDM and a receipt from Altech where he did it. It recently passed Emissions a few months ago. Its all red and the engine bay looks clean. He is the original owner and he is asking $10,000 for it and I am looking to trade my 1999 Mazda Miata with approx 30 000 kms plus he'll give me $6000 on top. The only thing I didn't like was the white rims, it looked like 16's and it was a type r 5 bolt conversion, not sure what it does in terms of performance but i've had a 2000 prelude and it handled decent. Anyhow any opinion is much appreciated.

This is his description:
1997 Honda Civic Si Coupe
Clean title as I had purchased the car from brand new. No accidents, body damage or rust. All the mods I have done on the car are top notch and I only use oem parts. Cars look very oem and clean as if it was a product from honda. Likes very suttle, I don't like that ricey look at all.Interior: 2 Sparco torino seats, Pioneer deck, jdm shift ****, shift boot, tint, compustar alarm
Exterior: Painted side skirts and door protector, oem rear skirt, jdm lip, sir rear lights, jdm type r badges
Engine: jdm b18c (gsr) motor just installed months ago, jdm lsd tranny, ported throttle body, intake, tanabe exhaust, new clutch, pressure plate, plugs, thermostat, chipped p72 computer, obd2 to obd1 jumper harness, chipped computer programs
Suspension: jdm type r 5 bolt conversion, new brake pads, lowered, front strut bar, rear lower tie bar

run a compression test on the car to see if the motor has any bad compression.... just one way to see if the motor is healthy enough or not, but that test won't tell you about mileage, just how well its maintained... check his oil... see if its black or nice and up to the level... shows you how careful he maintains his car... check his rad reservoir to see if its clean without no dirt... seriously check for signs of rust or bad body parts... check inside the car carpet for salt stain... check the spare tire well to see if its clean, make sure all the sound deadener (or tar not sure what its called) are still there in the trunk... check if the wheel well liner (not sure if that's what you call it) is still there and not taken off or came off... if you ahve time, take off the sides, to check the rockers...

lastly, a 5 bolt type-R conversion is expensive, one more bolt means the rims are more secure =) and its a jdm-factor... but also a stealing-target... so watch out, but the 5-bolt type-R rims will make your car more nice =)

if everything seems good to the car, its a good trade =) you get 6grand to upgrade further in terms of suspension.... add strut bars all around, upgrade lower control arms and sway bar, try to get urathane bushings all around... (improve the overall handling)... you should still have 4ish grand left... build motor or turbo that gsr, you'll love it since it already has LSD equipped... you will have one hell of a nice ride

good luck

Its not worth 10k. Thats the problem with hondas, most of your mods are worthless when resale comes, even though youve spent thousands on them.

Anyone who buys an engine especially JDM doesn't know how long the cars been driven, if they tell you 100% its around 60,000km then they are 100% lies... best thing to do is run a compression test , make sure its running smoothly, thats your best bet and hopefully it wasn't beaten. Unless they bought the WHOLE Front end with the engine still in the front and the cluster and dash attached then youc ould belive it more but if not... just tests and time will only tell

Regarding the 5 bolt conversion, your basically running on a Type-R Suspension, so instead of having 2 front breaks and rear drums your running on front and rear brakes, stopping is alot better, bling factor, white rims are nice but easy to get dirty (i have the same ones) so just try to either powder coat them later or just sell them i'm sure lots of guys on here wouldn't mind getting a set if they are mint. CONS about 5 bolt is it's heavy, so with a GSR in your car you'll be a bit slower then someone with 4 bolt, 5 bolt (QUOTING ND: " is like carrying another person in your car" ) haha

^ thanks for the info! where bouts do i get a compression test, cost to do it? as well, i personally dont like white rims, as it gets too dirty too quickly. But his tires are pretty much done and they are in ok shape.

The car is worth 10 grand, but realistically it shouldent sell for much more than 8.

being worth a price and being able to sell a price are two different things (based on my experience)

the car does worth 10k if you part out every thing...
but you can never get labour back and consider the mentality that a swapped car often means trouble... you lose 25-35% of the worthiness....

so i say 7500 is not so bad if everything passes your inspection..
you can get a compression tester, or get your mechanic to do it...

when compression testing, you try to have them almost similar across all four cyclinders... ie. something like 200,195,195,190 can still be good... but something like 195 190 170 185 (ok, but you should look into the cylinder that produced 170)

good luck... try to ask for about 8-9 grand... the money can be well spent on building up the motor =)

you might as well pull the jdm motor/tranny out and sell it off, and do a full k-series swap man!!! hahaha

the jdm gsr along with the lsd tranny can go maybe 3000 if you find the right buyer... try to negotatiate another 2 grand on top of the 6 grand... when you have 12 grand of cash (after you sold the gsr motor too)... you can spend it on a K20 (type R) -6spd man! upgrade the brake pads, rotors, improve suspension with full coilovers... add I/H/E, do the proper tuning and using a good management system...
