my gf has a brand new civic and she got her oil changed three weeks ago, and the engine light came on, i checked out the car, there is oil on the hood and all in the engine bay, checked the dipstick and its dry. the oil cap is missing. what steps should i go about to make sure the car is okay and if not so that i can prove it was the problem. im gonna go take pictures now

So they did the oil change and forgot to put the cap back on?
Who's the noob that did the oil change?
Hopefully you had a little bit of oil in the crank so it didn't cause too much damage.

well the oil light was coming on when at idle at a light, then itd go off, by the time we got back from dairy queen the check engine light was on, im taking pictures, we got the receipt, going to buy a new oil cap tomorrow morning and adding oil then taking it to honda to see if theres any damage. she took it to her moms mechanic, i just know his name is dave in mississauga, sorry. he did say to bring all the bills from the cleaning, oil, cap, etc and he'll reimburse her, his guy did the oil change for him. **** im pissed.

It happened to my father's old 88 Camry. Oil change was done and he drove it home. Couple days after (not sure if it was immediately because he did not know this from CEL), he noticed a little hump on the hood. If it was hit by something, it should have been a dent rather than a small hump. So he opened the hood and the cap was placed upside down on the engine (how everyone does it most of the time) and the mechanic forgot to put it back in and shut the hood like that.
Oil everywhere needless to say. He went to get some oil, filled it up and closed the cap and called it a day. That was what, 200,000km? Car retired at 350,000km and it wasn't because of engine failure but something else.
Moral of story, it might not be as bad as you think. But of course, have it checked out. Unless you do a rebuild (which I don't think the mechanic is willing to go through) and look for any internal damages, the only way to deal with this is fill it up and continue about its daily life.
Honda motors are relatively strong, a guy ran a bone dry motor for hours and filled it water (to abuse it intentionally) and it wouldn't give up. A clip on internet a while ago.

I had this happen to my old SiR once. Pembroke Honda oil jocky messed up. They washed my engine bay down, fresh oil change, new oil cap, however wounldn't fix the dent on the inside of my hood. Said oh it was like that before
For the few times I went to Pembroke Honda it's always been sub par service. If I go to dealer I take my Honda to Toyota dealer across the steet.
There shouldn't be any serious harm done. At most a compression test, however your engine should still be ok.
