Help install power steering!!!
Hi guys,
I just signed up for this forum,
I did my search to see if this is already been posted...there are way too many threads and none that answered my question.
I just recently sold my Prelude SH to buy a Honda Civic CX...I love the shape of the car and all...it sucks that I had to drop a few notch on speed...but that doesnt bother me since I love my civic...
My question is...I have the CX Hatchback..and it has NO POWER STEERING...I get irritated when Im trying to parallel park...can someone tell me if I can install power steering on a 2000 civic CX and if so...what parts do I need? and what do you think it would cost me to get this done...in terms of labour?
thanx

I was looking into this a while back to but couldn't find any one answer but if someone could post on here and give a pricing since I already know the parts needed that would be much appreciate.
but IMO its a little over rated power steering sometimes I'd only get it so that I can say I have power steering because been driving without it for a year now and its better at top speeds more control and you get used to the pull after a while that you can use one hand on the wheel.

Philmore, what are the parts you need?
the steering pump, rack, resevior..are there anymore?
Only reason i want power steering on my car is cuz i pararell park a lot and it gets annoying sometimes...but i understand what you mean about more handling and how its easier on top speed. I bought this civic so i can learn to do everything myself..so even the power steering business, i only want to try it out so I know what kind of labour is involved.

PS rack (as complete as possible)
PS pump
PS hard lines with brackets
PS pressure switch, connector, and wiring
PS pump brackets (depends on your engine configuration)
PS resevoir
PS hoses
and true I'd like to try it out and put it in two but I'm not in a hurry to do it I'm content with my manual everything car lol

Si rack will fit your car. All parts are listed. Its gonna take some time to swap everything over. If you need any help, I could swing by when you are doing it and give you a hand. Always willing to give a hand with a project.
Btw, I recently removed my power steering, all the lines/pump/reservoir, looped the lines and honestly, its the best thing I've done so far with my Integra. Love it!

so...today i spoke to a representative from the scrap yard...they want 80$ for the pump,
120 for the rack.
I spoke to the guy with the 98 civic SI, he wants 160$ for everything...what you guys think?
i know that the pump u can get on ebay, the OEM kind for like 10$. but I dont know about the rest of the parts...should i just go with the CIVIC SI?

I have a pump, if mitch doesn't want it, I can sell you mine. It came out of a 92 Integra. Ill compare it to an ek pump later this week but I'm sure its the same.
And 160$ from a part out seems just slightly steep. Try lowballing him a bit haha.

I had another member suggest going to the junkyard...I've never really been to one with the intention to buy anything llol
so...do you think parts will be cheaper there than getting them off this guy for 160?
i dont want to waste my time going to the junkyard and start removing stuff only to find out im payin 300$ lol...what you guys think?

nevermind,
I called for cooksville junkyard, they suggested 75$ for ps pump alone lol
and they said that for me to get the hoses and everything, im going to need a special tool. I might aswell go with this guy on for 160 i guess...i'll def. try low balling him once i get there. haha

Start working out, pump some iron, build some muscle. Then you won't notice the manual steering.
On a serious note, good luck with the install. Let us know how you make out.
No power steering sucks...especially on a fwd car.

you know what...i agree, it does feel really nice driving my car without PS..but honestly, sometimes i feel so strained...especially after a long day, I really dont feel like wasting my energy on right turns especially or parking my car reverse lol...
i spoke to my mechanic today, this guy is giving me a whole new story...he says that 2000 civic cx is not built for PS, and for me to install it , i need a whole new part that is unique only for the 2000 models...i am so lost what he means...the guy i was talking to earlier on, 98 SI, he is willing to sell me all the parts for 150$...but now I dont know what this other part is that i need..My mechanic quoted that it;ll cost me 1000$ alone to get this done, but i dont really trust his words since he might be out there to rip me off...anyone have any clue what part he;s talking aobut?
I have a 2000 CX, im getting the parts off of 98 SI...only difference is that my CX never came with PS, so i have to get all the parts on the SI to build it...confused..anyone?

YEAR TO YEAR CHANGES
1997 Honda Civic: For 1997, all Civic models wore 14-inch tires. Otherwise, except for the addition of standard wheel covers, changes were minor this year.
1998 Honda Civic: Civic saw little change for '98.
1999 Honda Civic: Honda spruced up the Civic for '99 with minor appearance changes front and rear, plus a revamped dashboard with amber lighting and rotary climate controls in place of sliding levers. Two additional models were added in midyear. The 4-door VP was produced in limited numbers and included air conditioning, keyless entry, and special paint. Also a limited-production model, the 2-door Si got a 160-horsepower engine, 5-speed manual transmission, 4-wheel disc brakes, a rear spoiler, and low-profile tires on 15-inch wheels.
2000 Honda Civic: Redesigned, slightly bigger Civics were expected for 2001, so changes were few for 2000. ****A standard tilt steering wheel went into the base CX model.****
