I am in great need of your expertise. I am currently in the process of buying a used 2002 Honda Civic LX. The car in question has 75,000 kms (rather high for an 02) but looks to be in good condition and the owner has the 5yr extended honda plus warranty till 100,000 km's. Here is where I need your advice. After looking over the service records, the owner has had about half of his oil changes done at honda and a few done else where (I know oil changes can be done else where but i thought it was worth mentioning). He has kept track of most of the service records but admits that he didn't do all the scheduled Type B maintaince service at Honda nor did he do the Type D at 48,000 Km's and the additional Type C at 64,000, he did do the original Type C at 32,000. He said that he has had a licenced mechanic service his car when needed and didn't want to pay the extra $$$ to have regular maintainence things done at Honda. Having said that, will this car still be covered under Honda Plus Warranty?? I will be having the car inspected and safetied, he is open to having the car inspected at any shop or dealership but he won't budge on his asking price. I will be paying out of pocket to have it Safetied to save some additional cash on the car, where is the best place to have the car inspected?? I have looked at a place called Priority Plus Inspection which is recommended by the APA and CAA and does a thorough 180 point inspection. Do you think a Honda Dealership would be the best place?? He said he was confident to have the car inspected at Honda but that they would charge more than any other place to have it safetied. Any thoughts??? Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

probably best to look for another one if it hasn't been cared for... plus your warrenty is only good for another 25 000 kms and may not even be valid since he didn't do the right thing... so unless he's asking very little for the car i'd keep looking... always remember if you have any doubts about a used car dont buy it

with high KM's look for perfect service record from hondano perfect service records move on... if this was a 5th gen I'd probably say go for it

Would a high mileage vehicle mean lots of highway driving? Perhaps you can ask the seller what is his typical route?

A 60,000 KM JDM engine's condition can be similar to a 150,000 KM CDM because those in Japan have to idle a lot more and do a lot of short distance travel.

Thanks for all the comments. The car was mainly highway driven, the seller commuted over 75kms daily to work. I'll be taking the car to a CAA approved inspection shop today for a 170 point inspection. I've been informed that this inspection is far more thorough than a safety only inpection and it takes almost 2 hours to complete. I also spoke to Honda Canada and they were pretty helpful, they told me the warranty would be fine so long as the maintence records are in order. I'll be sure to press the seller to provide me with all of his receipts.
