Lightbulb Hello Everyone...Looking for 2nd car..suggestions?

Hi Everyone...

Just wanted to take a minute and say I am a newbie on this site (yay..1st post ) and also wanted to mention, what a great website this is. Good resource for all Honda Civic owners.

Now onto my questions....I currently own a VW Corrado VR6, and was in the market to get a 2nd car.

I have been very interested lately in the SiR Civic Coupe. Am I correct to say this car was offered from 1998-2000?? or 1999-2000? The reason I ask is to me, I feel the car has a very good mix of power, economy and good styling. I am sure we all agree Hondas are relatively trouble free, so I don't think the issue of that would come into play with the SiR.

Since my quest will be mostly looking at private sales, what is the search criteria for this car?? What should I look for?? mileage? are there any trademark Civic trouble areas?? Rust?, fit and finish? Stuff like that? On top of that, what is the going range for a car like this?? What is reasonable in terms of $$:km's ratio?

My ideal find, would be a clean title, stock SiR. Given the amount of time these cars have been out in the market, would this be unreasonable to ask?

Again, thanks for all your time and efforts. If there is anything I omitted, that I should look at, please feel free to mention it.

I hope to find one, in good shape somewhere...then, I'll make it out to some Civic GTG's....or I could bring the Corrado too...

Take care all.

Cheers,
Corrado2nv

its a great choice for a honda.
u can find sir's all over the place
ranging from 13g's and up.
make shure that when u purchase the car that u check the engine and tranny and the body vin's match up (theft recovery could be's).
these cars get stolen left right and centre so make shure u get an alarm.
not hard to find unbranded sir's in mint condition aslong as your willing to fork the money.
so far no problems with the sir's (nothing major just little stuff that most of the sirs dont even have a problem with).
and they were made in 1999 and 2000.

Thanks for the reply...I appreciate it.

I figured that much as well...that it would be a good choice for a honda. Prices are about right...of course there are some that are still being sold for sticker price...but i guess, if you want somthing good, you gotta pay for it.

Yeah...I should look into that VIN stuff. Are the VIN #'s easy to find on these cars..besides the windshield and door jamb? Cause you mentioned there were other spots.

Wow..the SIR's are still being pinched eh? That's crazy...I heard all hondas have that unfortunate rep..too many preying eyes...its a shame, really..Now what kind of alarm would you recommend?? There are soo many on the market, is there one that you guys think does a good job?

When you mention (the little stuff) that can go wrong...what areas are you talking about? I know for the most part the engines and trannys seem to be bullet-proof. How about corrosion on this generation ? Better than before? I guess I should take someone who knows Honda's with me when I go take a look at them.

Coming from the VW side I am pretty good on their gear..but Honda's are fairly new.

I appreciate all the help sofar. Keep it coming..

Cheers,
Corrado2nv

its pretty easy to spot the vin numbers.
when u open the hood there is one on the firewall there is one stamped on the engine, on the actual parts themselves like the front bumper and fenders etc....
alarm i would recommend any 2 way pager alarms. brand? doesnt really matter remember its all in the way the alarm is installed if u want reputation go for viper or compustar and then get it professionally installed and hidden in a safe place and not the usual places.
rust is rust no matter where you are in canada its not going to change it all depends on all the measures you take to maintain the car ie. rust proof, under coat, washing it etc....
minor problems when i say they have woudl be little things that i have heard over the years of pretty much any honda doing (which is normal after wear and tear) things like window regulators etc..

If you want an un-molested one like mentioned above, look at the Honda dealers. In most cases it will be an off-lease car, or one that was traded in after the financing was over for a new one. I'm sure dealers might have stolen ones too, but it's not as common as a no-name used dealer. If you buy one form a Honda dealer, sure it will be a little more $$$, but you can get an extended warranty with it and in most cases a major dealer will stand behinfd their sale.

Oh, and as a former VR6 Passat owner, the Civic is a far superior car. Sure it may not be as fast as the VR6, but parts are so much cheaper (OEM and aftermarket), it's better on gas and WAY more reliable.

My Passat was a sweet car, but I would take either one of my Civics any day over it. If you buy an SIR, mod it a bit (or alot), I guarantee you will sell the Corrado in no time. Dubs may be nice cars, but they are too un-reliable.

One of my old neighbours had a Corrado and we used to leave for work at around the same time in the early morning. I could barely keep up with him from the lights, but on the highway I could slowly pull away. Oh, I think the Corrados are one of the best looking cars ever made.

I just thought of this...

You want to buy a 4 year old car to be a second car to your 11 year old car? Why do you want a second car that is better in most respects then you current car? Is the Corrado stock or modded? Most of the Corrados I have seen around Hamilton (not many) look and sound pretty stock. A modded one would cost a small fortune compared to an SIR.

I think if you take an SIR for a spin, you'll like it more.

I've driving both a stock SiR and VR6 Rado.
I like the Rado better. It may be heavier but it's got the torque to make up for it.

Hey, Mr. Corrado,

If you are serious about a 'stock' SiR, I may consider selling mine. It is a 2000 has 58,000 kms, it is black. What's been done:
15 X 7 Alloy wheels with 205/50-15 BFG Comp T/A's I put on this summer, A genuine Honda accessory rear spoiler, a front JDM Civic Type R "H-mark" (not the cheap rip offs but a real emblem). I have removed the original front "H-mark" and the SiR badge from the back. Oh, it is black and I am the original owner. I am running Mobil 1 synthetic since, practiacally new.

I have never had any problems with break-ins. The radio, suspension, engine is all stock. There are a few dings and scratches but normal for a 4 year old car....

I am not in a 'rush' to sell it but if I can get a good offer, I will consider selling it...

Hey Guys..

Well first off I have to say thanks to all the replies on this subject. I appreciate it alot.

I have to agree that the SIR is a very fun car to drive. I've had the oppurtunity to drive one a few years back and they are quick and nimble. Just the way I expected them to be, just by looking at it. Its looks can be deceiving. Its quite potent, for the class that its in. Hats off to Honda for doing such great work on it.

Now as for the Corrado VR6 that I have. I honestly could never get rid of it. I have always wanted one, ever since I was 16 working at our local Hamilton VW dealership. I had the chance to drive one when working there (needed to get gas for it) and immediately said to myself "one day...I will get one" And low and behold, in 2000, I found one in Kitchener...It was a 93 VR6, black metallic, bone stock, with only 70K on it...original owner had all records and service done up to date. I bought it. To this day, she still is completely stock, except for one very rare piece. The intake manifold. It was a 1 of 500 intakes ever made for the Corrado. VW Motorsport made it to beef up the already amazing torque curve. It was rated to add 10-12HP, but about 20ft/lbs. I was very lucky to find one of those since only 500 were made. As of now, there are only 2 people in Ont, with one. The rest are in Europe and some in the U.S. Currently the car has 90K on it, and is a summer only, no rain, winter garage queen I been offered more than what I paid for it, but declined. Its one of VW's best cars ever made, and back then, it was WAY ahead of its time. Only 90,000 or so were ever made from 88-95. Most of which have been wrecked or totalled years ago. I will leave her stock, cause I wanna see what interest there is in 10-20 years.

Now, back to the SIR

I feel they are like a Corrado, not many made...rare, and UBER fun to drive. That's why my interest in them is so great.
I have read everything you guys have said about the cars, and agree 100%. Maybe one day, when there is a local Hamilton/Burlington meet, I will come out and check out all the rides. If its nice out, I will bring the Corrado, so you guys will recognize me No boo'ing, if I park next to you guys...

I appreciate all the offers for purchasing the SIR's you mentioned. And I will take it into consideration. But I do have one question. What are your reasons for selling such a great car?? I, not wanting to be nosey, if its personal then no worries. I know you guys said there is no rush to your selling, but is there something else you guys wanna try out? Another Honda??

Maybe when I find a dealership, with an SIR, I might ask you guys to help me out. Your experience with these cars, is vast compared to mine.

Now what if I found a private sale SIR, is it still a good idea? Of course the car would be checked out, but still? thoughts on this?

Again, thank you all for all the info and time spent replying to this. It helps alot. I guess I will keep track on when the next local GTG is, and try and come out.

Take care all,
Corrado2nv

no matter where you go a stock sir is a stock sir.
just be careful of whom you buy it from
if its private sale and its a younger person i would be concerned as to if it was raced etc...

also remember this
buying a car that was never modified is better then buying a car that was modified (even if its only a little modification like rims)
why? because once a car gets modified it no longer performs as a stock car and its harder to judge the car for what it is.

BUY A STOCK SIR ONLY.

even a modified car that has been turned back to stock stay away from those especially usually things are hidden behind them (ie. poor maintanence, broken pieces etc..)

Hey Rukus,

Thanks for the info.

I think that goes for all sporty cars too..no matter the make..Before I bought my current Corrado, I had seen countless butcher jobs, and shoddy repair jobs. Good thing there's groups like this on here to help people, when all they want is a good car to drive and have fun with.

I shall keep you guys up to date, when I am ready to buy (hopefully soon) and give you the scoop on the ones I am looking at, for feedback.

Take care,
Corrado2nv
