Hatch vs Coupe?

Hey guys, I've posted only once on here before. Still considering my options. I'm torn between a hatch and a coupe, are there any real benefits to having one or the other? Also, I've been looking over prices on Kijiji etc. And I've noticed that 95-00 civics are a bit pricier than they should be.

For example, if a 95 hatch has so much rust on it its barely recognizable as a civic, it shouldn't be 5,000$ :P Or at least imo.

Can someone let me know what a reasonable price is for a generally stock civic (hatch and coupe) with 150,000-200,000 kms on it should cost? 95-00. I understand that there is more to consider than simply the mileage itself, but its generally my first consideration.

Thanks guys, if anyone can answer those two questions that would be great. :)

you mean 96-00 :p and is also agree they can be over-priced. i would probably get a coupe but thats just me.

D.T.P 12-Jun-2010 03:20 PM

I say 4dr. Lol

To answer your question, a civic from 92-00 (since you mentioned 95 which is an EG) should run you from 1500-2500 in decent shape. That is if its stock. The civics for 5k usually have swaps and decent suspension. That ofcourse is still overpriced. Look into civics out of toronto(gta) usually are bit cheaper.
Get something with a decent body with least rust. Motors are cheaper than body work.

Cha0tikz 12-Jun-2010 03:28 PM

Perfect.

Haha exactly, thanks for the quick responses. You're correct 96-00*** I really like how the hatchback is compact, however, I also like how the coupe/4door looks like a practical vehicle as opposed to more of a toy car :P! (no offense haha) Are there any real benefits in terms of every day/winter driving between a hatch and a coupe/4door? I've heard that height and clearance can be an issue with the hatch.

Also, does anyone know or can anyone recommend a few websites to look for cars to purchase. I'm by no means a car mechanic, which is why I'm looking to get into an older civic, a car that I can gain experience with. My biggest concern as stated above, I'd rather avoid body work haha.

ej8, 98 coupe... never had an issue with snow, i'm still on stock ride height and have no plans on lowering it... decent trunk space, able to haul a lot of groceries and a few months back i hauled home a full closet from ikea after i folded down the back seats and front seats... also used it to help my parents move, fit all kinds of **** in it, you wouldn't believe... i would look at autotrader.ca...

also i fit about 4 people in it once besides me, two of my boys who are my size and two girls... another time like 4 girls in the back and 1 in the front... was a bit of a pinch but just enough leg room... for a small car you'd be surprised

Cha0tikz 12-Jun-2010 04:31 PM

That's extremely reassuring! Thanks for the input. On an additional note, from 96-00 are there civic codes I should favour, and some that I should avoid?

(You said yours was an EJ8, is there anywhere I can read up on the differentials between the models?)

stev 12-Jun-2010 04:56 PM

if i could i'd get an em1.. just sayin...

D.T.P 12-Jun-2010 06:54 PM

Different chasis codes mean different trims.
Nothing to avoid nor look for. Go out, see a few for sale. See how you like it yourself.
Clearance? Not following. I'm lowered over 2" and plan on winter driving like that. Some better winter tires and you are set.

coupe

tr1p 13-Jun-2010 01:04 AM

Lol I find myself owning a coupe and wanting a hatch real bad.
At the same time my buddy envy my coupe as he owns a hatch.

In the end , it's all about your pride and joy of a civic. Preference is your key by apperance and looks.

Where as statistics comprehends with how you wanna build your civic toy :p

Cha0tikz 13-Jun-2010 12:39 PM

Perfect, that's all I needed to know. Thanks guys :)!

D.T.P 13-Jun-2010 04:13 PM

Ive had both, a coupe and now a hatch. As tr1p said when you own a coupe, you want a hatch. and when you own a hatch you want a coupe. It never ends lol.

I love my coupe, but I think if I were to buy another, it would be a hatch no doubt. So much lighter...

Hugehumongo 14-Jun-2010 03:48 AM

i picked up a 95 coupe purely because you cant put a wing on a hatchback. that is serious riceage. not even i would try to pull tha toff lol. for performance i say hatch because its lighter. less power to go as fast:)

This one is 4k mint condition and no rust 2000 Honda Civic Hatchback - City of Toronto Cars For Sale - Kijiji City of Toronto

You have to set in your mind what you want to pay. Once you've figured that out look for it and you will find it. Kind of goes with everything in life.

I like the hatch, not just cause I have one either. Clearance and height issues vs coupe? same sh*t really only diff is shorter wheel base. Lighter car and you can get more in the back of a hatch then a coupe. Even if you put a C-pillar bar in to make up for the added flex of having a hatch.

As for wings, they can be rice on a coupe too. the lines on the coupe are what make it look good and any wing ruins that for me.

+1

That's why I took my wing off. That, and it was obstructing my rear-view...lol
