Thumbs down Got ripped on my car, returned it yesterday!!

Alright for those who followed my last thread here's an update.
I had a better chance to check out the car when it was delivered to us and sat in my garage. Started noticing things that I should have noticed earlier (made the mistake of wanting the car and letting emotions overlook things). Anyways, my buddy (a Honda guy) stopped by later that night and we noticed various parts that were repainted. We thought it was still a good deal considering the condition of the car and mileage.
So then I called buddy who sold me the car to ask if the timing belt was done. He told me that it had been done when they put in a new motor a couple of years ago. WTF? He didn't mention anything about a rebuilt motor. I'm thinking okay.....things are getting strange.
So I called the Ohio dealer (dealer sticker still on car) and ran the VIN in the service department. Well guess what? While the car currently had 105K miles as of April '99 they showed it as having 161K miles!! There service records showed a rapid and steady climb of miles. So I called the seller right away, cancelled my bank draft, and he agreed to take the car back claiming he didn't know anything (I believe he didn't know about the rollback).
Anyways, the search is back on. My GF is very discouraged to say the least but we shall look again. Thought I'd share this with everyone as a warning.

I'd be seeing if there is some way of finding out who rolled back the km's and nailing them to a tree...

You should get it looked at by a mechanic to see what condition it is in etc, if there has been any accidenets etc.

Do a VIN check on carfax.com

If the car turns out fine by a mechanic I would keep it. It has a rebuilt engine which can be good if it is not beaten on, and if the body is in great shape why get worried. It is hard to find a mint older honda, so some are bound to have some engine work or other work done.

You're nothing but trouble...

Crystal, good luck. Not too many unabused Civics out there. The best thing to do is to buy a base auto one from an old lady or one with monsterous mileage for real cheap and redo it from the ground up. It's the only way to know for sure.

Thanks for the link Cosmic. Even if the motor was fine (which it seemed to be, not burning oil or anything) with the miles the way they are we're talking about a total of over 300,000 kms on the suspension components!!

There was this other '93 si we looked at that has air and auto and the body is the best condition Civic that I have seen while searching (minor scuffs, no rust). I even called the dealership where it was serviced and this car was serviced religously at the dealership at regular intervals up to it's now 185K kms. The kicker is that the dealer won't take less than $5,700 plus 15% tax. That puts it at $6,555 for a '93 si with 185K kms. At this point I'm beginning to think that the extra G might be worth it knowing the history of the car. If the GF thinks she can afford this (Saving for school) I'll buy the used car package and call the previous owner to find out more about the car.

That's the kind of price you'd be looking at for a 93 Si. Considering that it's coming from a dealer, that price is pretty good.......not the best, but pretty good.

hey you may also wanna report the dealership or person to...

OMVIC

www.omvic.ca

they are the council who governs car sales, the dealership can get into alot of trouble... id report the person selling the car for sure.

good call from the VW rep I woulda said the same thing even if the person selling the car didnt know about the mileage thing dealership or not its still their liability and resposibility to know the history of the car...if they dont know they are safest to say they dont know... obviously whoever owned the car before knew the emblem was missing and the door was sticky...just my two cents...
Hey Bill: get ur mail yet? the surprise is on its way...lol

When selling a vehicle (or buying one) you should always point the new owner in the direction of the mechanic who worked on your vehicle.

For myself (and HappyB16) that would be Joe at Altech who knows our cars better than we do probably as well as all the components and mods.

Regards,
OK
