Got my ride. Got some questions!
Hey guys,
Finally bought my ride. A 1997 CX. I'll go on a photo shoot once I get these couple things out of the way. Anyway, I know there are sub forums for these questions, but instead of make 2-3 different threads I decided to just make one. I'm just getting into cars, so alot of this is over my head. I'm trying though. First question, I bought the car and the speedo stopped working a few minutes later. Phoned up the guy (this is through a dealer), and he said he'll fix it. The engine light is on, so a buddy of mine helped me trip it and read the code. The VSS is broke. The dealer deals mostly in Chevys and not Hondas, think he'll have a hard time fixing this? Next question, once I get the speedo working I want to get a tach installed. This cluster doesn't have one and I actually want it in the cluster. I know I'll need to buy a whole new cluster, but should it be easy to just pop out the tach and the fuel gauge/temp gauge and install it into my cluster? I don't wanna mess with the odometer. The car has low mileage (85,000 - reads 87,000 cause the dealer changed the cluster before I bought it) Last question (sorry). The same buddy told me that I need a valve adjustment. There is a ticking noise coming from my engine. He said it's about a $50 job. Where is a good place to get this done? I've read the DIY, but it's all over my head and I learn better by watching. I just have the stock engine (B15?). Thanks in advance! :drivesafe |
swapping in a new cluster (SI cluster with a tach) is super easy and might even fix your speedo problem (unfortunately, if you use a cluster from another car the mileage will be off). But if you wanna keep your original speedo to have the accurate mileage on the odometer, you can just take your old speedo out of the cluster and install it into the SI cluster that has a tach.
But if you are getting a VSS code, thats most likely the reason that your speedo doesn't work. The VSS is super easy to replace, its literally just 1 bolt and 1 electrical connector. A valve job is a $50 job, maybe not at honda b/c they might charge an hours labour....but any mechanic will be capable of doing a valve adjustment. |
Thanks for the fast response! :D
I know the SI clusters have tachs, but wasn't there other clusters with tachs that where not as expensive? |
d16y7 thats the stock motor for your car.

The cluster is expensive if you go directly to honda to buy it. I would suggest you go to a scrap yard, and grab one from them. Im not going to guess the price of one, i just know it will be cheaper then buying one new. Especially if you go to a scrap yard and take it out yourself. I dont know how hard it is to take the cluster out of a EK, but i can take mine out of my EG in a few minutes.

1. Cluster is very easy to take out, and its plug and play. No need to do anything else. Get the VSS fixed. You will find lots of clusters for sale in our classified forum.
2. Take your car to our affiliate Defcon, they can do the valve adjustment for you as well as fix your VSS for you. Link for our affiliates is at the top of the page to your right. |

I'll check out Defcon for the vavle adjustment. As for the VSS - it'll be free for the dealer to fix since it's apart of safety. :) |
open up the yellow pages to the scrap yard section, i know there are a few in ur area, i just dont remember there names. They will be easy to find though.
