Is this a good deal?

Hey guys, my first post on TCC. btw, love the site amazing work you guys did here lots of knowledgeable members. Now im looking at picking up my first civic this week i wanted to know if its a good deal or not heres the specs

2001 Honda civic DX (auto tranny, manual windows)
black
154,200K
listing price: 6500 willing to sell for 5000

history
-car got rear ended by old lady and small damage was on the bumper. lady claimed insurance and the present owner got bumper changed at no extra cost
-car belongs to 2nd owner currently
-he stopped driving it since nov 2008 because he got a 09 CRV (its weird how he didnt sell it all these days)
-i test drove the car and it feels rigid. the only noise i get seems to be coming from around the brake pedal area. It squeaks when i step on the brakes.

so i know you guys are really knowledgeable about civics and if you guys could let me know if this i should take this deal or not that would be great. btw, looking forward to coming to some TCC meets this summer.

I would not recommend an 01. It was the first year of production of the 7th generation Civic and they had known problems with the auto transmissions and front struts. I had an 03 and it was a very good car. I would spend a few extra bucks and get a newer one.

hey thanks for the response. the problem with me is that Im a student and im really short on cash. but the civic i like the most is the 7th and 8th gens. I know i can get 99 for a good deal just cant push myself to buy that i guess.

In terms of the 03, iv been searching high and low and i see that anything around 5 - 6 k has about 170 - 190K on it. I have to buy an auto because sharing it with sister at the time. I used to have an accord but thats scrap now. Now the 01, i know i might have a few problems but my freind has a garage where i thought i would be able to get work done. Do you think that buying a 01 will make me go to the dealer or can i get work done at the private garage? also in terms of price what do you think? 5k? thanks

i would say its good deal. Not a crazy deal but pretty decent

My sis has a 2001 no problems so far. However i found my 2000 civic se to handle better and overall much better then 2001 ...

Its your car and out of waranty, so you can take it anywhere for service. A 99 or 00 Civic may not be exactly what you want, but they are essentially flawless compared to an 01. A new tranny isnt exactly cheap. I had a 98 Civic before my 03 and I liked it much better. I never had a problem with it.

Price seems alright. Most 2001 Civics on trader.ca are 6g's +. It has been in an accident, so I would get it thoroughly inspected first.

I would also consider mazda 3. I seem a couple of mazda 3s (2004) going for 6-8 gs ....

The 2.3 is a gas eater so i would not recomend that if you are a student. Good power though

The 2 liter standard seems to be fairly good on gas and its pretty powerfull for a 4 cylinder

Hey DumbasSi, thanks for the reply. yeah i am definitely going to run a carfax check on it. Now i heard that sometimes carfax is not 100% accurate. is there any other companies i can use to check that out? I had a 94 accord all these days and iv looking to get into a 05 - 08 4 dr SI grey ext for the longest time. But unfortunately due to the economy and hours cut at work, i had to downsize to the 01 - 03. Looked at 03, love them but cant buy.

Now the 01 that im looking at, im planning to keep it for say 1 - 1.5 years then upgrade. Will it be worth it for the time run?

hey rick10, thanks for the suggestion with the MAZDA 3. Youre absolutley right about the gas and power. Friend of mine drives a 04 auto. Amazing car, but im just too stubborn about a civic. Lots of guys look at other options but iv always wanted a civic especially a 7th - 8th gen thats why im being so **** about it. If you see any good deals on 01 - 03 civics that come in black that i can buy for say 5 - 5.5K cash, do let me know. Im still looking. This one is on top of the list but like DumabasSi said, i will definitely consider all the other factors such the accident on the car as well. Thanks guys.

That price is about right, but just like every one has said, the EK's are a better car.

i will say one thing , since i have a mazda 3 and a civic . I can tell you that the mazda 3 is a lot more powerfull (except for the si civic), better exterior , better interior, overall a much better looking car than the civics from that year

However civics are easier to mod , less expensive to fix , better on gas , more reliable, keep their value better

I m happy i have both but if i had to choose one i ll def stick with my 2000 civic se....

hey spike, thanks for the suggestion. EKs are great cars. Dont get me wrong, i think they look and drive really well when modded properly. heres my pet peeve with the EKs. After driving a 94 accord for like 4 years now, i had to get a car that did not resemble the same dash/interior. also the other thing is i had my mind set to get something with the new body type. If i had a bit more cash, i spring for the 03+ but im still looking and im definitely thinking about what DumbasSi said about the first batch of 7th gens. If you find anything good as to the 7th - 8th gens, pls do let me know Thanks

I m not sure if you tried craiglist but they have a lot of options for 2001 civics ranging from 3500 up to 8 000

classifieds - craigslist

may be worth a look... most of them are private sales too

there is an si going for 4800 with a fairly small dent

2001 Honda Civic Si

That would probably cost you 300-400 to fix and the guy may go down to 4600.... so 5000 $ for an 01 si its a better deal i think

that civic caught my eye as well. Unfortunately its standard. Right now i need to share my car with my sister because my accord is gone. So hence, the auto is a must right now. Thats a good deal actually and i called the guy just out of curiosity last week. He said okay to 4500. He had that post up for a while, keeps on reposting it because he cannot sell. but thanks Rick, still looking.
