Going about the right way?

http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/aroun...es/2002/pacer/

take a look at that site guys, tell me what you think? Are the police really going about the right direction in so called "educating" the tuner public?

Personally I think they're totally going the wrong way. If they're truly "educating" us then why are they giving people tickets for modifying their car or what not INSTEAD of encouraging us to take the races to the track.

Giving tickets, issuing warnings, giving us statistics about how many deaths are occuring over the past 4 years isn't going to effectively "reduce" the amount of street racing. If anything it'll just do the exact opposite.

I think they need to make it an incentive for people to race in or on official tracks/dragstrips. Or even make a place locally within the city to host these events (instead of having people drive 1.5hr or 2hr drives to the current tracks).

Honestly though, if I was a racer (which I clearly am not, as Jugglez can vouch :D), I wouldn't be the slightest deterred from racing at all unless they completely took my license and car away (heck in some cases that statement may be false as well), but the point is, they're not educating anybody in my opinion.

They're just slapping offences onto drivers and not really providing a "solution" for the people that take part in these events.

Well that's my rant, anybody else care to voice out in this "P.A.C.E.R" program that's being enforced?

imported_dented dx 10-Jun-2002 09:43 AM

Thats a bit better than other articals ive read. on another note what kind of car was in the very last picture?

HAPPY 10-Jun-2002 10:07 AM

That is the dumbest site... they claim to be fighting street racing yet they put a pick of a pull blown dragger on there.

That's Serge's car...there is no way in hell he runs that thing on the street so why the hell do they have that there.

...bahahah...and look at the file properties of the image of the Altech car... "yellowracer" You have got to be kidding me.

Cops don't even know what to look for...

99CHB 10-Jun-2002 11:53 AM

the drag car was the first thing I noticed, too. and the second car on the bottom is more a show car than a street racer. if they're out to give tickets for external mods, then PACER should be called:
POLICE AND COMMUNITY EDUCATING RICERS

imported_dented dx 10-Jun-2002 12:05 PM

Very True. Target the rice! cuz bodykit make the car go faster. and speed kills!

90hatchsi 10-Jun-2002 11:05 PM

This whole thing is stupid. On saturday night I saw a 99' stang and 3 series BMW going at it on RICHMOND! YA DOWNTOWN! What about those guys? They're not going to do anything about those guys. Why don't they put a picture of a mustang in that article too? Not just civics.

Here is draft of an email I am thinking of sending to the Toronto Police. I know many of us who are not street racer are concerned about being harrased just because of the cars we drive. Let me know what you guys think. I have'nt sent it yet, but am strongly considering it.

I would like to take the time to commend the Toronto Police, along with the other jurisdictions for their efforts in eliminating the trend of illegal street racing. I am an auto enthusiast. I do drive one of these modified sub-compacts. I am also a husband and a father of a three year old boy, who I am hoping will enjoy this past time as much as I do in the near future. I am not a street racer. I confine all my racing activities to sanctioned off road events. I have never taken part in any street race. As I have stated earlier I welcome the effort of the Police Services in their fight to keep our streets safe. I do however have a concern with this new program. There are many other enthusiast such as myself who are not street racers. In fact many of us are very outspoken with regards to this subject, as we beleive that every street race makes the enjoyment of our hobby more difficult. I am concerned that everyone who drives a modified car will be looked at as a street racer, a someone who disregards the law and the lives of others I can speak from experience, as I have been stopped by an officer, who did not give me an explanation or a reason for pulling me over. In fact he looked very surprised when I stepped out of my vehicle wearing a suit and tie, as I was returning home from a late day at the office. I am sure there are more stories such as this, of none street racer being pulled or or even harrased, because they appeared to be a something they are not. I hope that the Police Services of our Province will recognise the fact that me and others like me are on their side. We support their efforts and commend them for their diligence, but please be mindfull of the fact that everyone who drive a modified sub-compact is not a street racer, and we are very respectful of the laws and of the lives of the people we share the roads with.

Thanks for the input.

you went to university....didn't you? :D

I encourage you to send this letter! I give it an A+
Good job, I highly agree with you as I am a father and respectable person as well! Give us credit when credit is due! Not all of us are out to race the streets to prove a point!
Besides, I'm tired of being asked by ppl "What's under the hood?" Is this what it's all about? To some ppl it is, but for me all show and little go keeps me out of trouble! Just my opinion. Even when I eventually modify my engine I'll know when to use it, and it won't be on the streets where it seems all these modified cars are the ones that are ruinning it for everyone! Use your heads guys! It's not all about how fast you can go! There's always a faster car out there, you can count on that!:fustrated

Just my opinion!

Send this to the Police and also to all the editors of the major papers...somebody will pick this up for sure.

screw PACER. whole program is a joke. wasnt there a long ass thread about this already??

T.O.tegs 11-Jun-2002 09:31 PM

last week I was in my cousins hatch (he was driving) going maybe 5km/h less then the speed limit. while we're passing a street on our right hand side a cop was going to make a left turn, turn signal on and all. next thing you know he pulls behind us and **cheries**...I was like "give me a ******* break!"

cop comes up to the car and first thing he asks is "is there anything else modified other then the muffler?" my cousin and myself where pissed and he simply said "yes, and?"

the cop continues "that's an aftermarket steering wheel right? does the h..."(my cousin didn't even give him time to finish and gave the horn a nice 8-10 second long BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP :D )

we both have a smirk on our faces and the cop is now looking confused, he asks "so what's under the hood"..quick response from my cousin "a B20B, anything else?"(we had ballz that day for some reason:p )...the cop is like "is there an air filter on that?" we both start laughing and don't even answer but instead talk to each other in arabic saying this guy must be a rookie:D ...my cousin looks at him again and says "anything else? anything else?" we both still have a smirk on our faces:p

cop asks for my couz's drivers liscence and for my ID(WTF??? )..I ignore his request at first but gave it to him after the second request...he goes back to his car and comes back a few minutes later and tells us to have a nice day.

we must have laughed for like 1/2 an hour after that about what happened? I mean how the **** is a pig supposed to know what a B20B is?:D better yet "is there an air filter on that thing?"

cops can eat a fat one. I've aquiered a tape recorder which I will gladly brandish infront of them next time I get pulled over for BS and just have a little fun with there stupidity.

pacer is a ******* joke

Haha that's jokes. Yeah man, middle eastern peep have balls the size of watermelons hehe. I'm part Isreali, and most of my boys are, and some of them just do **** that no-one in their right mind would hehe. Yeah **** PACER, and **** the po.

imported_S@URN 12-Jun-2002 04:23 AM

I agree with what is being said and I think the letter should be sent off.

I got pulled over 6 times in one week for nothing, and almost everytime the cop almost hit me before pulling me over by not stopping at stop signs and lights. If anyone has seen my car there is nothing there. I have an filter and an exhaust which if I don't floor it make no noise. I have passed emissions with flying colours so there is no prob there either. I am an all show no go I want to put a DOHC in my hatch for the look not the speed, I want a turbo for the sound not the speed.

I will admit to all that once and only once I was peer presured into racing a civic coupe. I don't like racing it means nothing to me I want people to say WOW!!! nice car, not WOW!!! it is so fast. Well I beat the coupe and 5 sec. later "cherries" I was scared shitless and was saying I knew I never should have done that. Well he asked me and the other drive some questions and was nice and said "I think they are on to you, so you better leave" and I swear that I have never and will never race again, unless it is on track.

ryuujin 12-Jun-2002 07:03 AM

wow, thanks guys for all the replies :) I'm glad to hear all your responses and I'm even more glad to hear what autoxer is suggesting to do!

I'm all for you sending the letter to the cops or even the newspaper.

However, sometimes I think that the papers is a good choice as well, sometimes I believe that whatever the polices choices are, they are brought out about what the society thinks.

For example, I used to rave, and they at one point threatened to ban raves altogether, eventually the rave community spoke out and gave the general public a better understanding of what the situation REALLY is like and well the story ends with a happy ending, raves haven't been banned altogether.

Likewise, with our community being threatened with the PACER program it is important that we speak out as well. For those that race on the streets, take it to the tracks, where things are regulated. It's not that hard, infact the claims of fame are just the same.

Having said all that, I do commend the police (after having read other peoples views and learning from them) for their intentions to stop the racing on the streets. But I still don't believe that giving out tickets of insane fines and what not is going to solve anything. Infact pulling any of us over for the pre-reasoning of "it's a sub-compact and it's modified" is still unfair, Mustangs, BMW's etc. all out perform the rest of the sub compact community when they come straight off the lot...so why isn't there an issue towards them?

Somehow it also appears to me that whenever something bad happens, the news always covers the story when a Japanese car is involved. Last I saw a Mustang being trashed up on the news was....well...I think never in my stay in Toronto so far. Of course this is merely an example and I could probably be wrong. The way I see it right now though is that the cops are simply out to get the Japanese sub compact community in trouble. I don't know why though...I could be wrong.

cluster 12-Jun-2002 08:27 AM

If you have any knowledge of pending races or those who are participating in them, you are encouraged to call our Service at 416-808-2222 or any of the other participating police agencies. Anonymous calls can also be made to Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477). Your call may just prevent the seventeenth GTA street-racing death from occurring.

WHAT NO REWARD?

EL_Sport 12-Jun-2002 12:57 PM

Definitely send the letter. Send it to the police as well as your local municipal politicians. I did something similar a few years ago do to similar circumstances and did actually get responses from the police department. If enough people are making these types of statements, it may force the police and politicians rethink this program and many of the troubles that many of us are currently experiencing with the police.
