Gas milage observation

Gas milage observation
I have an observation about gas milage with my civic comparing to other cars that waste more fuel.
My Civic wastes 7.6-8 liters per 100 km, city and highway mixed (mostly city). It's good.
Let's take my mom's car for example. I had to drive her car for a week and i almost went broke. The car wasted around twice as much gas, maybe more in the city (and you have to put premium in it). BTW, yes, I did drive it more aggressively but not THAT much.
Anyways, moving on. My buddy has a Saab that wastes similar gas to my mom's car (he also drives more aggressively than I do in the Civic).
However, I notice on the highway it's a different story.
I drove my mom's car to a cottage (600+ km both ways), and there was MORE than a quarter tank left! I could've gotten like 800 km + out of that tank. And it gets like 500 max city.
The results were similar to my buddy's Saab.
I was also driving like 160 on the highway so I wasn't taking it easy.
The point is that on the highway these cars decreased their consumption to almost half.
Now on my Civic I got the same 7.5-8 L / 100 km as them on that trip, so I wasted as much gas as them even thought I usually waste half the amount. I was also driving slower than them.
Does anyone else notice that with the Civic you get more or less the same gas mileage on highway and city, but on other cars you get MUCH better highway mileage ?
Why is this? I checked the RPM that the car is at and compared my mom's car and the civic and they were relatively close, the civic being a bit higher, but not significantly.
Thanks for reading :P
For the record, ALL cars have I4s, the Saab is turbo and my mom's car is supercharged. The saab is 2.0 I think and my mom's is 2.3. My civic is 1.5.

I get much, much better economy on the highway then in the city. The occasional time my car leaves the city (2x this year) I have almost doubled the distance driven. IMO this is because i have a short ratio and do a lot of city driving in the 3-4 thousand range...

Contantly accelerating off stop signs and lights will eat up your gas faster. Since civics weigh next to nothing, they don't burn too much gas in city driving cause there isn't much car to accelerate. The heavier the car, the more weight to accelerate and the more gas you'll burn.
However, on the highway, a heavier car is easier to keep at a constany speed, and since they typically have more power lower in the rpm range, the engine dosn't have to rev as high. They stay in overdrive and put along at 2000rpm or so, sipping the fuel.
I do find with my civic, I'll get much better mileage on the highway. bout 500-600 combined and up to 700 highway
.....shouldn't this thread be in the discussion section???...

with my Maxima SE I can go to Sudbury and have about 1/4 of a tank left, thats about 550km, all highway, with the AC blasting all way, with my civic, a full tank will get me 550km on the highway =p then again ,my civic is a 1.6l I4 @ 4000rpm @ 120. the maxima was a 3.0l V6 @ 2000rpm @120
^^
even so, my CX got 650k / full tank on the highway, that was about 2800-3000rpm @ 120
so yea gearing would help, if the B16 came with a 6th gear, gas consumption on the highway would be much better, I'd guess 2km / l more or like 2l per 100k less

the sts when the engine would overheat (cuz they knew they would) would turn off 4 cylinders and use the other 4 as airpumps to pump out heat...but the gearing on caddilacs is what gets them decent consumption on the higway...like I went to montreal on 1 tank in my fleetwood which in the city was a pig on fuel

my TL goes 11-12L/100km in the city, while just doing 8-9L/100km on the hwy
my civic with DOHC ZC goes about 7L/100km but on the hwy they are pretty much the same as the city...
my EF civic was about 8L/100km with 1.5L engine because it's lack of power so i have to rev up most of the time
the DOHC ZC is much more powerful in low end torque so it's better than the D15B engine

The only thing i can really think of being wrong with your story is that you didnt take into account that a civic has a 10gallon gas tank while the saab and whatever your mom drives probably have way bigger tanks...
I mean, sure, my dads Tundra will go 500 kilometers and only use 3/4 of a tank, but that 3/4's is about 70 liters, where as mines about 7...
