gas efficient car owners are going to be punished
"California has a new excuse for more taxes. Claiming losses due to fuel-efficient cars, such as Gasoline/Electric Hybrids, California is cooking-up a new system to punish people who aren't using enough gasoline. They want to tax commuters by the mile. How would this be accomplished? By requiring everyone to install a GPS device in their vehicle, and charge them their "taxes" every time they fuel-up."

I'm not quite sure how this affects fuel-efficient cars more than any other car. And if that were the case, I doubt it will go through. CARB would have a fit if the state were trying to target fuel-efficient cars, and CARB wields a mighty big stick...

ppl in Cali are rich anyways
btw, tax by the mile seems like a good idea, I hate seeing 1 person SUVs driving around (like an Excursion used to transport 1 person) haha besides, if you get taxed every time you fill up, wouldn't the less efficient cars be punished more cuz they are at the pumps more often?

well, when you buy gas, a fair bit of the cost is due to taxes, think of the tax money the government would get from 100 people driving mustangs and cameros day to day as opposed to hybrids and economy cars.
by people moving towards hybrids, a lot of tax money received from gas will disappear..... so they will force another form of tax to get people by distance as opposed to fuel usage.
these taxes go towards fixing roads and government theft.
they need it for both.
-------
currently
low fuel consumption car
100 Km
$30 gas -> 1/3 taxes = $10
high fuel consumption car
100 Km
$60 gas -> 1/3 taxes = $20
---
proposed
low fuel consumption car
100 Km
$20 gas
$0.25 per km tax -> $25
$45 to drive 100km
high fuel consumption car
100 Km
$40 gas
$0.25 per km tax -> $25
$65 to drive 100Km
----
bbarb, get it? i made these numbers up... but they demonstrate my point..

wow that is pretty stupid. Saving money is a problem so lets recover it by imposing a new tax to take money away from citizens so we can fly around in first class planes to useless trips where we stay in 5 star hotels and waste all the tax payers money on nothing. I think its a pretty stupid tax. I hope that never happens over there or here.

Oh, oh, looks like another big brother ploy to incorporate GPS technology into ODBIII.
What prevents the government from having the computer track what speed you drive at and billing you a speeding ticket at the gas pump as well. Or better yet why not monitor how many times you drove to your girlfriends house and have the information faxed to your wife's lawyer to be used in your divorce.
When does it end!? I'm going to develop a system to circumvent this problem as soon as I finish my "black box" blocker for my ODBII car.

I heard that the canadian gov is already looking at this and if it's a sucess in the US then they will bring it up. And finiding out how much you drive is easy. You have to punch in your Km's when you renew yor license plate. they will just tax you in a yearly fashion.
I think it suxs because what about those people that have to drive for work? I'm an onsite computer tech so I'm driving everywhere....I'm gunna get bent over by the tax system
