Factory block heater?

Hey guys,

I am wondering if Civics typically have a block heater from the factory. I have a 2000 EX sedan and I can't find the cord under the hood (if there is one...)

Every other vehicle i've owned has had one tucked away somewhere. Any ideas where I might find it if there is one? Or if there isn't one, where to get one installed.

Thanks.

Nope. It is optional.

any shop can install one... hell I can do it myself.
Its just a little messing. You have to take out all the antifreeze, pull the bolt from the block... insert blockheater and refill antifreeze making sure there is no air in the system. So let it idle a bit until the fan comes on and it stops bubbling.
I think in total the blockheater will cost about $40-70 depending on where you go... I paid $40 with a great deal and about 1 hours labour if you get someone else to do it.

A friend of mine actually chose to install an inline coolant heater instead of a block heater for this winter season. It's basically an A/C powered heater core that's fastened directly into the lower radiator hose with a ring clamp on either side. It heats up the coolant, keeping it near operating temperature when plugged into a timer / temperature-sensitive cord.

$45 @ Partsource / 25 minutes installation (easier from below if you have access to a hoist).

Block heaters are really nice if you constantly have to park outside. I had it installed in my old EK hatch and it was awesome to start up the car in the winter.

if it heats it that much... I'd actually want to see how much it runs you on your power bill. cost less but might cost more in the long run

Well, he has 2 plugs he can use with it:

1. Timer = activates only 1.5hrs - 2hrs before he leaves in the morning, assuming he knows his lazy schedule.

2. Temperature sensor = activates only at / below -12oC, when the car would begin to benefit from a block heater / inline coolant heater.
