Engine gone! What to do?
 

Hey,

So, it was bound to happen. Basically my d-series is gone, and I'm not sure what to do.

- get a b16
- get a b18
- get a b18c
- get a b20
- sell it and lease a new civic

I dont feel like putting much $ into this... mostly cause I might get married later this year (god willing).

Originally I wanted to go b20 but now I'm thinking b16.. I always envied the dohc when i had the crappy sohc

what do you think? do people really buy shells? how easy would it be to sell a car w/out a motor

i would buy your shell depending on what condition and type it is

don't lease a new car... that is almost like throwing your money away unless you buy it out at the end.

anybody who tells u change the engine and offer their is not looking out for u..honestly 98 is pretty old..just see if u can finance a new civic. like a used 06,05

so you don't have any help to offer i guess... i'm trying to offer a possible solution to a problem. i will provide a 1 year warranty on my engine because i know the history of it unlike a jdm engine you buy from anywhere else, you don't know the history. i'm not trying to take advantage of anyone... actually, now that i look at it, my swap wouldn't work in your car anyway since you have a hydro tranny.

leasing a car is a bad idea for anyone, UNLESS you intend to buy it out at the end. as mentioned earlier, financing is a better idea imo.

your mentality is wrong there. lease is good when you know you don't care about a car, and you don't want it in the end. because the amount you lease comes out to about how much a car depreciated in 4-5 years.

say you lease a brand new car 25k for 300+tax a month (say $350), that comes down to about 16800 for 48 mths or 21000 for 60 mths.

and a 25k + tax comes to about 28500. and typically a car drops in about 8000-10000 range (about 25-35% in 5 years) which is reasonable, so after 5 years... you car only worth like 15000-17000. and you decided to BUY or LEASE another new car.

now your loss is 21000 - 17000 = 4000$ on the high side and about 16700 - 15000 = 1700$ on the low side.

now say you financed or decided to own. then you're looking at around 28500 (0% finance) and it would be more if the interest range from 1.9 to 7.9%
28500 - 17000 = 11500$ loss!

so after 5 years, and you decided to have a change because you have kids and so. your loss from a lease is between 1700-4000$ if you're on a lease, and your loss would be 11500$

illamatic, so you should really think of if the car is for long term, like 10 years and/or you're going to pass on to your wife or your kids down the path and your'e going to get another one for yourself when you have a pretty good career. if its just like a short term car and you don't look to have multiple cars, then i would suggest finance or owning it. because cars is a depreciation monster, this is why lease is so popular nowdays, people rather keep the money in the bank to save, and also minimize the loss when they lost interest of the car after 4-5 years. finance it and own it only when you know your'e going to drive the car FOR LONG....

oh, and of course fix the current car if you don't look to have monthly car payments in your monthly expense for the next 4-5 years :cheers:

If you are looking for a cheap fix with the wedding coming up then I would say just throw in the same stock engine......if the money is technically available then a b series swap would be nice depending on which you chose all in al will cost between 4000-6000 with all the parts required as well as any tune up parts ...

2. replacement d16y8, and drop the extra dough into the vmware ipo (tip: get in on this!)
