a cup or two of rubbing alcohol will make your car run hot, but cut the hydrocarbons and pass emissions

they can't really affect the results of the machine.. its pretty straight forward. If you don't post your results or what you're failing, no one is going to be able to help you.

I'll take a stab and say get a new cat. change your oil, and use that emission tester stuff from crappy tire.

run the car hot before you go for the test.

My problem was the O2 sensor.
But what you can do is buy a bottle of Ethanol from crappy tire (99.9% pure) run that till you finish your tank of gas, and do emissions again.
I would recommend posting up the results so we can help you save money and pass your test quicker.

Oil change has no effect on emissions test. If you're burning oil, it doesn't matter if it's clean or dirty. You'll more than likely fail.

If your car has failed 3 times and you're not selling it, you are eligible for a conditional pass. That means that the shop can do a diagnostic on your failure to figure out why it's failing. Normally this will cost you 1 hour of labour.

If the shops determines that there is more than $xx (Used to be $200, not sure what the limit is now), they can then qualify your car for the conditional pass.

However, if you're selling the vehicle, the car must pass the test, which means probably costly repairs.

If you're truly interested in being a responsible citizen, you should do the diagnostic and perform the recommended repairs to the vehicle.

Please post the results of all 3 tests, and report any work you've done to change the outcome of the results.

edit:
There are ways that the shop can affect the outcome of the results, but it's minimal. If it's going to fail (badly as you say), then it's going to fail regardless.

ok well sorry i fialed 2 times once on friday and once yesterday and the cost is 450 and to do the diagnostic is 100 bucks for them to look at it and then if its ognna cost more than 450 then i can get the pass and only if they do it i cant go to my own mechanic

so my mechanic did a water injection....we emptied a can and a half of throttle body cleaner and then did a water injection...emptied like 3 botles of water while he reved the sh it out of it to pass it through he sed he did this a couple times

i changed the sparkplugs, i changed my oil, and i got a brand new cat and i styll failed i guess ill post the results its pretty embarassing sand everyojnes tlaking **** so nobody talk **** because i will get pissed im sick of hearing the bull**** from everyone i have to scan it i guess and ill post the results but everyday is something new with this car

Just type in the results. We don't need a scanned copy...

Yes, for the work to count toward the $450 limit, you have to use the shop that did the initial test.

Type up the results like this:

1st test:
Curb test
HC:
NOX:

Road test:
hc:

2nd test:

etc.
Don't worry about the poking everyone will do. It doesn't matter, it's just the internet dude.

CO means carbon monoxide and is present in the air but large amounts contribute to global warming.

HC means hydrocarbons which is unburned fuel

NOx means nitrogen oxides which is a by-product of highly heated and compressed air that has nitrogen in it

Many things can produce high HC's such as too much or even too little fuel, not all cylinders firing, advanced timing, bad catalytic converter, or an air pump that isn't working. These are the most common causes. Tune up's can prevent most emission problems. NOX is generally worse on higher compression engines. All engines produce NOX but the use of EGR valves will cool and slow down the burn rate of the engine's combustion. This considerably lowers NOX values.

O2 levels are controlled by the fuel ratio being correct from the fuel injection. If there is an exhaust leak all the test numbers will be low and incorrect except the high O2 numbers which will void the test. CO has to do with the efficiency of the burn in the engine and also is highly effected by the fuel to air ratio of the engine. CO2 is also an indicator of the engines set up. The HC's and NOX are by far the largest problem areas. Catalytic converters scrub or clean the majority of the emissions and need to be replaced when they break internally causing a loss in power and no longer clean the air. So I would say, check your timing. Is it advanced? You'll benefit from retarding it some.

The car isn't efficiently burning fuel. What is your gas milage like? How many KM/tank?

Did you replace the O2 sensor? You might want to do that. Also check your air filter. If you've got a restriction and not enough air is coming into the engine it will cause HC's as well.

Does the engine burn a lot of oil? How often do you top it up?

edit: I'd also recommend taking it to another shop. If the workers were acting as irresponsible as you suggest, I wouldn't take my car back there.
