EG vs EK (race-car)

I was thinking of buying another hatch project. The car will serve as a race car(auto-cross) only so styling doesn't matter (the car will have no radio and only one seat--to give u an idea).

My question is which is a better choice and why?
-aftermarket availability?
-suspension, handling?
so on and so forth..........

eg is lighter.
but personally i think the eg is outdated and i would definately go with ek.

everything with the ek is user friendly unlike the eg.
front bumper doesnt come of with a snap of a finger like on the ek
centre console is not user friendly etccc....

yea i think so, there is more room in the engine bay, and also things are very user friendly. few buttons on the top and 1 screw on each side and bumper is off. and same thing with int couple screws everywhere and buttons, really easy to work around in an ek.

IMO deff ek.

First question:

Are you going to be using it as a daily driver as well or purely as a motorsport vehicle

go EK cx hatch, so it doesn't have all the other options with it. it'll be easier to strip and will be lighter. the EK will be easier to work on like everyone else said, and will be more convenient.

I personally like the EK better for looks- and the car is for track use only. I already have a 96 hatch for daily use

thanx guys

One more question in regards to engine options. I'm debating between b16, b18(c1 or c5), or b20(b16 head) all of which will be built. what do u recommend and why?

also boost or N/A?

p.s. money isn't too much of an issue i'm more concerned with power balance an atleast some long term reliabilty....

EK since is the newer style and form. EG if your low on funds.. N/A if your planning to do a lot of lapping, autoX, track...Drag and Street would be forced induction most likely. With N/A as well, your car does not overheat quickly if the motor is done up with a nice rad and you can do a lot of hot laps...

All good project cars and for your purposes, that few pounds won't matter much unless you are competing on a national level.

I would pick 85-87 CRX HF model chassis (1713lb) , but that wasn't your choice. I would say EK CX hatch as a start.

Engine wise, if all of them will be built (with VTEC, sounds like that's what you want), then aim for 2 liter, use a B18C block.

You need to focus on power/weight ratio + transmission combo. If money isn't an issue, get your car down to 1700lbs (with you in it).

as much as i love my eg hatch and would never trade it for an ek... id say eks make better circut cars... eg maybe lighter but eks have a stiffer platform to work off... as for engine b20vtec all the way

That would be an awesome AutoX car/project ....too bad thier hard to find not rusted out, and I'm not sure if we ever got the HF here in Canada (I know we didn't in 88-91).

Plus, the whole carborated fuel system is a pain to go to FI from what I hear.

I've owned both ek cx and a eg si and i reallly prefer the eg more stream line less bulk lighter and just over all easier to drive and the ek is heavy!

id say go with an eg its alot more logical for a race vehicle specially with the weight difference

and since the eks are alot bigger they have alot more body roll around corners where it feels like the eg just huggs them tight!

ive had them both lowered with strut bars and the ek overall just fell like it pulled alot more when cornering where my eg just whips around them/

EG is a great car for a race car..... but i would have to say an EK stifer over all.... but that also means more weight.. in the end it comes down to what u like... over the other plus what i found was the ek is easier and cheaper to find then a eg in a good conditon.. but thats just me... some one else might think diff... hope this helps
