Question Is Downshift(double clutch) bad for UR clutch

hey guys/pals

is downshift(double clutch) bad for your clutch
would it cost your clutch to burn out faster?

i would think that it would have the opposite effect. double-clutching saves clutch wear and also reduces synchro wear. that's iff you do it right of course

1) press clutch
2) engage neutral
2) release clutch
3) blip throttle to match revs
4) press clutch
5) downshift

i think there's a thread about this already in the competition forum

hows it any better than just matching revs and dropping it into lower gear than going into neutral first?

yah we went over this on the other thread. i posted a link to an article for an explanation as to why you should go to neutral.

It depends how often you downshift.

What'll wear your clutch out faster is a lot of stop and go-city driving, riding the clutch, and driving at very low RPM's.

How come the extra steps

Riding from 3rd dropping to 2nd gear
How bout this

1. Depress clutch and HOLD
2. Shift from 3rd to 2nd
3. Blip throttle to match engine speed
4. Release clutch

Of course, this is done at the same speed you would normally shift. (so no time difference, except for a quick millisec to bring the needle up)

What's matching engine speed? Each car setup differ.

Eg.
Driving on 3rd gear at 50KM/HR, let's say the RPM indicates 3000
If you drive at the same speed (50KM/HR) on 2nd gear, the RPM would be higher (4500).

So, to downshift while driving at 50KM, you shift from 3rd to 2nd, and blip the throttle so the RPM matches that of what 2nd gear revs at travelling at 50KM, so (4500RPM).

This works both way, Shifting or Downshifting

so basically you should release half way to get the clutch spinning? I can do it almost all the time without going into neutral.

Double clutching while upshifting doesnt make any sense though. When you are upshifting you can let the revs drop naturally so that when you engage the next gear the revs will be perfectly matched. You dont have to blip the throttle to do that. Basically doubleclutching only works for downshifting. Why the extra steps you ask? This article will explain why:

from the article:

"Can you rev-match the layshaft to the transmission gears by throttle - blipping with regular single clutching? No. The layshaft is not connected to the engine while the clutch is in. Those that recommend throttle-blipping rev-matching are right that it gives a smooth transition when they let the clutch out, but it does absolutely nothing to match the layshaft and does not save your synchros any work at all.
