Detroit Auto Show review (long and 56k beware)
Drove down after the storm. Clear roads and quick tunnel, thank God! Thanks Bruno for the headsup info and offer of free parking.
Stayed overnight at the Pontchartrain Hotel -- nice place, right across the street from the Cobo Center.
The show is amazing; so much better than the Toronto Show, and not just in size -- it is larger, but so much better organized. Great lighting, good sound, and the best part, one huge floor. So many more concept cars, too. A real treat.
Some pics below, different from other posts, but here are some highlights and lowlights -- all highly subjective, of course:
Most gorgeous car on the planet: Aston Martin DB9 Volante in Slate Blue. Presentation, looks, technology -- the Aston Martin section exuded class. The car is divine.
Ugliest: MB/McLaren SLR. Christ, what a mess. All shark gills and oblique lines.
Runner up. Porsche Carerra GT. Too little 911, too much ugly!
Best presentation: Rolls Royce -- amazing car, amazing price, amazing lounge!
Runner up: Volvo. Superb presentation of some pretty mundane cars.
Worst presentation: Subaru. Ugh! Ugly cars, locked, with no pizzaz. Butt ugly concept, too!
Runner up: Mercedes Benz: Too many models, no central theme, a wannabe. And th
Surprising presentation: Ferrari, Lambo, Maserati. Blah...nice looking Scalgietti, though.
Biggest surprise: Domestic quality and style. Real shock, here. 2005 Mustang is incredible as is the Cadillac XLR, bejewelled with Bulgari. Domestic concepts were awesome, too.
Favourite section: BMW. What else
I can highly recommend the show. Worth the drive...
Aston Martin DB9 Volante
Rolls Royce
Audi A8 V12
Ferrari Scalgietti
Best lights ever?
Cooper looking over his work
Bullitt returns
Oh yeah!
