cost to replace timing belt?

well..i've got to get this done and i'm wondering what the cost would be to get this done..i know the labour is the most expensive part..so if anyone could help that would be great...

EDIT:: I forgot,, i might as well get the water pump replaced as well...so the parts cost would only be added?? which would be around 200 or so?

imported_chris_v2 27-May-2007 10:03 PM

its around 3.5hours labour for the belt and waterpump..

parts depends. You can probably get a pump/belt from napa for $120 (for the pair) or from honda for who knows.. 200$? (im guessing here)

If you want I can help you out with this service if your near Oakville..

imported_globalc 29-May-2007 11:54 AM

400 total for the whole job is a pretty good price you'd say (or anyone else....other opiniions are always good :P)

imported_kumanan 29-May-2007 12:05 PM

come into unity auto and get hooked up :) im not sure of the exact price though. If you call in right now with the spec's to your car they'll tell you. 416-285-8956

so you were offering to do this as a side job on a driveway chris?

imported_chris_v2 29-May-2007 10:17 PM

either at my shop, or in my friends garage.

why?

DumbasSi 30-May-2007 09:59 AM

Mine was $350 parts and labour 2 year's ago, so $400 seems right. I would also try contacting the Scott or Doug from Leading Edge.

imported_kon-yue 30-May-2007 10:42 AM

I need it done soon too ...

imported_globalc 30-May-2007 01:56 PM

new belts take some time to get 'normal' right?? i.e, they make some noise after their initially put in?

zeeman 30-May-2007 02:17 PM

um...no
New belts shouldn't make any noise.

Are you referring to the timing belt specifically? If it makes a whining noise than its too tight, if it makes a flopping noise, its too loose.

hmm,, mine was making a whining noise..

zeeman 30-May-2007 04:26 PM

take it back and tell your mechanic to loosen the tension a little bit, too tight of a belt will cause premature wear.

imported_globalc 30-May-2007 05:38 PM

yea...i called him and he said he's loosen it up a bit..thanks for looking out.

shlammed 30-May-2007 05:39 PM

doug at leading edge did mine in december for about $350 including parts

not really.. if its really noisy, something is improperly installed. I'd get the acc. belts before assuming its the timing belt

imported_globalc 31-May-2007 05:22 PM

the mechanic said the belt was fine , but the problem was the bearings,..the amount of tension on old belt was more loose,, so no noise was apparent, but in the new belt, there was a problem.

zeeman 31-May-2007 06:08 PM

bearings?
What bearings?....muffler bearings?

DumbasSi 31-May-2007 06:10 PM

Water pump maybe? He should have changed it too.

imported_globalc 31-May-2007 06:47 PM

umm...he changed the water pump, he said bearings.....i'm no mechanic...

edit: i took it in because of the noise the car made,,,he took me with the hood open, and reproduced the same sound by doing something (sorry..can't be very descriptive here) and said the bearings needed to be replaced and it was independent of the timing belt..

imported_chris_v2 31-May-2007 06:57 PM

probably an idler pulley.. the bearings inside them go all the time..

doug doesnt work at leading edge anymore. i called them up 2 weeks ago and apparently doug is no longer there.

DumbasSi 01-Jun-2007 08:52 PM

I wonder if Scott still works out of there.

imported_prynce_qt 06-Jun-2007 12:24 PM

I'm going to need my belt done by next month. I have a 2002 Civic Si coupe with about 158,000km on it. Where do you guys recommend to get this job done? And maybe a tuneup as well? I see the range should be about $400 for the pump and belt with labor. What about a full tune-up cost? Lastly, I want to confirm I only need timing belt and water pump? Is there anything else that would need to be changed at this time? Please list some shops and phone numbers and names if possible, thanks. BTW I'm located in the GTA.

imported_chris_v2 06-Jun-2007 06:49 PM

belt and waterpump is fine. When the technician does it, tell him to check if you need a tune-up. Usually I ask questions about fuel economy if the customer requests a check over, if he says its been a bit low, i normally change up the fuel filter if it looks old (you can test it, but too much time), i usually pull a plug as well and check fluids and air filter as well.

Some technicians will call parts that aren't really needed, so make sure you go to a good shop.

If you still have the original fuel filter, wires, plugs (doubt you do) but if you do, time to change them up, as well as do a coolant flush, LOF and maybe even a tranny service if they are all needed.

kwasley 06-Jun-2007 08:23 PM

my civic was 400
my prelude is 900

i recommend using oem parts.

imported_prynce_qt 07-Jun-2007 03:01 PM

Thanks for the tips, any places in the GTA to recommend?

imported_kumanan 09-Jun-2007 04:53 PM

oaky im thinking about doing a group buy for $300-350... I'll let you guys know. PM me if you guys are interested

imported_globalc 11-Jun-2007 05:08 PM

hmm..this is a popular thread :P..

my car seems to be whining in first gear and a bit in second gear..that is, as I increase the RPMs' in first and a bit in second, I hear a whine sound.

i was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on any problems...i read something about changing transmission fluid will fix this, but i dont know??

I need some referals to shops that do good job for low cost. Thanks.

DumbasSi 13-Jun-2007 03:10 PM

There are lots of places and many home mechanics. Try the Affiliates or search for people willing to do it for you.
