Talking city fido update

Just to let all those who are following know city fido is up and running.. I signed up today.. took less than 10 minutes... much better than when I signed up w/ rogers (more than an hour to get going)...

as well if you know another person who has a fido phone you save a bit of cash... give them your number and in 90 days there will be a credit to you (the person buying the phone) of $20 and there is a credit to the persons fido number of $20 that you used as well... the best part is there is no limit to this either... as long as ppl use your number to refer that's more money ...

I got a new siemens m55 phone for 50 bux, and they threw in a free case, car charger and head set .. you can also send away for a free camera attachment for the phone w/ a photocopy of the bill... the 45 bux INCLUDES the 6.95 monthly fee which is a great deal and with call display and voice mail the cost is going to be $51.25 + tax per month... can you say bye bye home phone

Thats one hell of a deal. I hope that other service providers will offer similar plans, with the number of people switching over.

actually, if i'm not mistaken, you are actually able to convert your home telephone to the city fido cellular phone.

i missed the debut of this on sunday at government, i was suppose to attend, but i was sick and could not attend the convention. but yeah, this is a really kickass deal, but from what i heard, is that once everybody is up and atom, the system is going to hang a bit, as in, telephone service will be quite busy. it was in an article about how vancouver introduced it alot of people ended up gettign busy system, but lets see how advance they are now.

I just switched my fido to fido unlimited to City Fido

Here's the billing break down for the plan i selected

$45.00 CityFido (includes system access fee of $6.95)
$ 6.00 Voice Messaging & Call display
$ 0.25 9-1-1 Emergency Service
-----------
$51.25
+
$3.59 GST 7%
$4.10 PST 8%
-----------
=$58.94 Total monthly cost

There is also a $50 1 time activation cost for the CityFido plan.

But if you sign up or switch, and you refer someone you get $20 off as well as the person that reffered you gets $20 off.

So if you wanna save $20 send me a pm or Brisk20 a PM

And yes, Fido can actually pic your home number and have it switched to a mobile. Of course this means cancelling your home phone.

I asked about Telus buying Fido, and the store manager told me that is a scare tactic to disuade people from buying fido because they would lose confidence on Fido being around.

she can still call you, and you can receive the calls
if she is LD then you will be charged to call her

yah you would lose out on the text messaging, but she could still send you messages.

Just txt her to call you

ic.. we don't txt each other for the sake of saving minutes and what not... we txt each other all the time for fun.. so I dunno..

but if EVERYONE is getting city fido then it'll be free for me to call em anyways with fido to fido

The ads for this are plastered all over the Future Shop/Best Buy flyers this weekend. It sounds like a fantastic deal!!

Is there a contract that you have to sign though? Like, a minimum number of months/years??

Had Fido like 3-4 yrs ago and hated it. Way too pricey for a cell phone. Now I think Bell is too pricey.
Telus is next.

yes basically in Canada you have 3 different times of phone carriers

ILEC's, CLEC's and Wireless providers.

the ILEC is the incombenant phone carrier and they control the distribution of numbers for a particular area (bell for Ontario and Quebec for explain and Telus for Alberta and British Columbia)

CLEC's are the competitive landlines and so therefore local number portability, the ability to move your landline number from one carrier to another has to be supported between the Ilec's and the CLEC's

Wireless providers buy blocks of numbers from the ILEC and so therefore are currently not mandated in Canada (they are in the USA) to offer Local number portability. so therefore when switching wireless carriers you have to switch your number.

Fido set themselves up as a CLEC in Vancouver when starting this and now they've done the same thing in Toronto.

Fido is doing this not to compete with the wireless carriers but to grab the consumer market that current lives by the phrase "I can't give up my landline because sooo many people know it but I do want a wireless phone but I can't afford it"

anyways I will warn you with the ILEC CLEC and wireless provider descriptions of a company come different responsibilities for those companys. I will say this though (since it was a multiple company issue and therefore "public") Fido got into tons of trouble with the CRTC in Vancouver with the CLEC designation new line ranges would come out for Telus Mobility or Bell Mobility or Rogers (yes I was on conference calls about this since I deal Primarily with BC and alberta) and these new line ranges when fido customers would call them they'd not be able to get through. The reason they weren't outed is Fido didn't want to pay the routing fees to Telus Communications (the ILEC in Vancouver) to route the calls to the third parties (like Bell and Rogers and even telus mobility) which is something they have to do ... either pay telus communications to route the calls or get connections to a toll company to do it. Anyways in Ontario Bell is the ILEC so I'll wait and see if the issues continue but I bet they will.

I'm with Bell right now....."regretably."

I hope Bell comes back with a similar offer for its subscribers.

Even though today was a holiday, It still counts as a monday. I know I have made the mistakes many times on a holiday monday that I use my phone as if it was the weekend and as a result rack up huge bills for that day.

It was such a relief to know I could my unlimited calls all day and that i didn't have to watch the clock.

cityfido rulez!
