Honda dealerships are expensive for exhaust, when I bought my Civic from Ready Honda it originally failed emmissions so they had to do over $1400 worth of work to it (no cost to me of course, they did it earlier and not all the work was on the exhaust but it was all done to pass emmissions). I could have gotten a sick exhaust set-up for that. I know you might doubt the $1400 so here is what the invoice I have from them says:
Emmissions Test (result=fail) - $35
Diagnose failure - $40
Replace Exhaust Manifold - $60
New Cat.Convt.- $734.11
New Exhaust Gasket- $13.67
Re-Test (result=fail) - $20
Clean Air Intake - $20
Replace Dist. (used) - $174 (damn a used part)
Adjust Valves - $40
Replace 02 Sensor - $182.67
Replace Cap, Rotor, Spark Plugs, Air Filter - $84.26
Remove Mid Pipe Heat Shields- $27.60 (I dont know what this is)
Replace Front Pipe Heat Shields- $120.67 (unfortunately not exhaust manifold heat shield too)
Re-Test (result=pass) - $20
Bottom line is that its expensive.

How much he spent isn't the issue. I think his point was the letter he wrote to Honda Canada. Eventhough they are paying for part of it, it is still too much to spend for an OEM exhaust.
Even if Honda pays for half, he's still paying more then he should for a stock exhaust. Maybe it's not just the exhaust that is causing the car to fail the emission test. Could it be something else? My car is bone stock and it has passed everytime.

my car got a new oem exhaust just before in purchased the car, the cat needs to be changed, i will eventually be doing a high flow exhaust system with headers and cat back exhaust, but i will need the OEM cat.
OEM cats last 10-12 years,
high flow cats wont pass you on emissions
Aftermarket cats 300-400$ will last about 3-5 years
Honda has agreeded to cover half of part/labor cost so my bill is 551$ + tax, this is normally a 1000$ job
The bottom line is that i want to be able to pass emissions and with a highflow cat it becomes quite hard.
Anyways going to get my car painted.

HAHAHHAAH
i'm sorry... but your getting RAPED!
150 - 250 for a cat(honda) plus **.99 for labour, plus the extras (studs, bolts etc..) domestics are more sometimes
overall the job shouldnt cost more then 400! (taxes in)
honda is ****ing u big time man, i called around before i bought my cat, partsource was like 150, my work was 70 (my cost) regular 140, honda said 1000.... keeping in mind, this is for a 90 sedan! as soon as he said, your looking around 1000 for just the cat, i told him to blow it out his *** and that i can get one for 150, to which he replied, ours will pass e-test.. the other ones wont... so why did my car pass with flying colours?
basically what i'm getting at is, take it to an exhaust shop, its cheaper..(unless its warrantied) dealers are out to get every penny they can from you. and if your looking for a good exhaust shop, try Speedy, or Midas, or Minute Muffler, all good places, i work at a speedy and love it, and i'm amazed when customers come in and tell us they dealer was going to charge them 3, 4 sometimes 5 times what we are

those of you who posted that high flow cats cost around the $250 range must be speaking of something else because performance improvements sells both vibrant and magnaflow(carsound) high flow cats for around $100, and yes your cars emission levels will still be fine

High flow cats are just metal shells, real cats have an absorbant metal, magnesium or some ****.
however thanks for the feedback everyone,
im not going to honda, im just going to get a full exhaust with a high flow cat like suggested and if i have troubles with emissions,
well...100$ will cover it

Just thought I'd let you all know that the emission standards for 96-up vehicles is alot stricter than sub 1995. Cantonagod failed emissions with his hi-flow cat on his 98, passed when he put his stock cat on. I couldn't get the Prelude to stop issuing code 420 with the hi-flow cat. Hence engine light meant no vtec
