car bucking

hey guys

okay so i am new to 5 speed but im pretty good at it now and i can conclude that this problem isnt because of my shifting

okay so when i drive everytime i release the gas pedal or press it down the car bucks/jerks now this is irritating becuase i constantly play with the gas pedal to maintain a constant speed

this only happens sometimes and i THINK its because of cold weather or if the car stalls and is turned back on the problem returns

my friend said its one of the sensors or theres too much gunk (carbon) in the throttle body so if this is the problem, how do i remove and clean all the sensors and the throttle body

also (now this part might not be related to the above problem but its a problem none the less) my car keeps going up and down by like 100-300 RPM on idle and when driving (not when accelerating) and sometimes when i am creeping on 1st the civic just keeps revving (rpm issue also)

the bucking problem didnt return until 2 days ago and its pissing me off so any help is good help lol

Does your friend know how to drive 5 speed properly?
If so.. is he having similar problems?

bengali548 29-Mar-2009 09:36 AM

No his car shows none of the problems I have

The sensor your buddy is talking about is most likely the map sensor. Its right on the throttle body. Little black rectangular thing held by 2 philips screws. This would cause inaccurate air reading. For that matter it could be the o2 which also can cause inaccurate air/fuel mixture.
Both problems could be due to one of those sensors.
Question for you: how is your gas milage?

I wouldn't say my gas mileage is amazing but it's alright my gas meter is also messed up because it keeps rising and dropping ( it'll rise and drop but usually settles by the right gas amount) I don't really know how many kms I get on a tank tho

D.T.P 29-Mar-2009 10:59 AM

Lol that's common for civics, and any car for that matter. When you are driving gas is moving around in the tank and on turns depending which way you turn will read less/more.
For the problem, try pulling out the map, clean the sensor up.

bengali548 29-Mar-2009 11:03 AM

how about the throttle body and how do i clean the sensor (i assume not dip it in water and scrub lol)

let your friend drive your car aswell and see if it does it for them aswell, and if it does not do it for them, then it's your driving. You should be able to get around 500-550 km's to a tank of fuel.

it does it for them also its like a come and go thing like sometimes itll accel and decel smoothly and sometimes it does that violent buck/jerk

spike 29-Mar-2009 11:58 AM

You could have a engine or tranny mount out some where. What it does it, is it making like a clunking sound? Plus i don't see it being any sensors on your engine, because if it was sensors, your engine light would come on and the engine would run like ****, not start to buck as you say.

bengali548 29-Mar-2009 12:00 PM

theres no clunking sound just a violent jerk/ buck when i release or engage the gas

spike 29-Mar-2009 12:06 PM

it could still be a mount, be the only way to know what it is, is to get it to a shop and get it up in the air to look at the car, we could spend all day on hear guessing what it could be.

You do not remove the throttlebody to clean it, there are a few ways of clean it, just get a clean rag, and spay brake cleaner on the rag and then just open up the butterfly on the throttlebody and clean around it. As for the map sensor, it's only 2 screws that hold it on, just remove them and spray the sensor with brake clean.

Btw when it bucks/jerks is it in 1st gear? Or low rpm 2nd?

That's because the gearing in the tranny.

bengali548 29-Mar-2009 04:54 PM

so your saying its my tranny thats causing the bucking?

spike 29-Mar-2009 04:59 PM

no i'm not saying its your tranny. It's worse in 1st vs 4th for instence, is because of the gear ratio. 1st has a shorter gear then 4th does.

bengali548 29-Mar-2009 05:00 PM

ahh okay well today on my drive back home there was no bucking what so ever (maybe it was warm??)
