Calling all EK owners/experts
So, as some of you probably know, my 4th gen blew up. Don't have the will to fix it. Will probably start parting it out soon or just sell it as a parts car. Anways, I want to buy an EK hatch. Now, from the experience of owning these cars, I'd like to get a general idea on the advantages/disadvantages that you feel each year/model has vs. other years/models. I'm looking to spend $7000-$8000. I was hoping to get a hatch with 120k on it or so. Give me some advice people!

****, I never knew your motor blew up.
I'm sure you can replace the motor for under $1,000....that's if you do it yourself. It took me along time to finish my swap, but it was well worth at the end.....sense of accomplishment.
But if you want an EK...they certainly look a lot nicer. I like the 99-00 style better because of the front end. As far as advantages, surely you'd pay less money on insurance for an older vehicle. The interior of the EKs is very nice.
I know eg6ajk was selling his EK complete with b20 motor a while ago, not sure if he still has it or not.

I'm not interested in fixing my 4th gen even if I got a motor for free. I just want a car that I don't have to fix every weekend. And advantage wise, I mean going from 96-2000...what options are on the newer ones that were missing in 96 and 97 etc...

front ends are different between the 96-98 and 99-00. Pick up a hatch CX and you should be happy. I have a DX and the only things it didnt come with that id like to have are power windows and power locks but those can be insalled for cheap.

One thing that comes to my mind is the way you sit. The newer gens seating position feels higher where as older gens your a$$ is on tha fl00r hahah. Newer are more refined in body noise and all that jazz....it really comes down to preference.

As a 6th gen hatch owner, I have nothing but good words for them.
As for difference, the front end is a give away. Then comes the interior centre console. Other than that, they are pretty much identical. As for the guage, CX does not have techonometer. Other features like rear wiper that little roof spoiler are the difference. Of course, some CX owners added the rear wiper feature, cause we have snow in the winter.
Problem wise, that is practically none. But the typical inconvenience would be the reverse gear. You will really (maybe 20% of the time) need to shift into the right place or else it will grind. I have grinded about 6 or 7 times in the since I own the car from year 2000.
A 2000 DX hatch should be in the neighbourhood of 8000 dollars (dealer buy back price) so that should be a rough guideline for a private sale.
Again, great little car with very minimal / next-to-non problems. Good luck.

As mentioned already, the front is different from 96-98 and 99-00, but the tail lights on the 99-00 are red/clear opposed to red/amber that the 96-98 are.
The HVAC/radio area is a bit different on the 99-00. Option wise, I don't think there is much diference through the years. You can't get ABS or a moonroof on the Hatch, but both are available on the SI Coupe and I believe the EX Sedan.
For the amount of money that you want to spend, you can get an SI which IMO is alot nicer then a Hatch. Or, be different and get a Sedan or an EL. The Hatch's are too basic I think, but are great for a future swap because of the light weight.

Well, I'm buying the car with the possibility of a swap next year. So, hatchback it is for sure. Plus, after owning the 4th gen for a long time, I'm really used to driving a hatch and I like em. I felt like a goon driving my moms 4 door today.

IF you gonna swap, then the Y7 motor won't be an issue. I race mine and at 120K, with racing motor oil, not a single sound from it.
Anywho, you have made the right choice. Now finding one without body panel rust will be the hard part.

usual rear quarters. Shouldnt be too hard finding an EK with a good body. People do like to put alot of km's on them though. You could pick up "cocoran_chris's" black EK hatch that hes selling but i think it has like 200km's. Would be a good base to start with and you would have money left over for a swap with ur budget.

yeah the car looks nice, wouldnt hurt to check it out. IF it runs pretty good you could drive it till next year and then swap. You may even be able to talk him down in price slightly and put a swap in right away.
