Buying a used SIR
 

Hi,

I just got my car stolen. So I plan on buying a civic SiR used. My question is, What do I look for when buying a SiR. Like to make sure it's good quality and What I should avoid. Also What price range should I be looking within. I personally want to spend less than 7 grand. So what kind of SIR should I be expecting? Thanks.

try looking for one with low mileage. i got mine with 52k miles on it. sometimes its better to buy one for a little more than get stuck with expenses later on. those cars usually get beat on.

99-00 SiRs are well built cars and have a CRAZZZZY premium.

02-04 SiRs are also well built, but because they are like the red-headed step child of Honda, they aren't as pricey.

I was going to get a white one a couple months back for $8500. they are less likely to be beat on and aren't as overpriced as EM1 SiRs

For a used SiR, try to find out how much oil its burning. They all tend to burn, but if its been beat on it will definitely burn more. A 99-00 SiR should have had timing belt and water pump done regardless of milage so find out if that has been done, or else factor the cost of that into the price for the car. Do a compression test. Check out the tranny, see how it feels, if the gears engage smoothly, etc. Check out the clutch, at what point is it grabbing, does it slip, etc. This will help you get an understanding of how the car was driven. I would avoid a car that is/has been lowered, chances are it was beat on. Good luck.

P.S. If it only has a stock alarm and you plan on parking it outside, especially at night, I would highly reccomend getting yourself a good 2 way alarm. They tend to go missing alot.

yeah dude they are crazy on insurance. I saw somewhre that the 2 most commonly stolen cars were 1. 2000 SiR and 2. 1999 SiR lolll...I dunno if it's still but that's pretty crazy haha

I personally have been looking for a 99-00 Sir. Preferably located around the Toronto area.

Don't be afraid to buy a civic with a few kms on it. Honda's last a long time, especially if they have been well taken care of. If the car is mint and has been well maintained, then there is nothing really to worry about.

Also, look at the history.

Your Si just got stolen? Aren't you afraid the SIR might get stolen too. It's more of a theft magnet then an Si.

As for what to look for... An SIR is essentially 99% the same as an Si. The only major difference is the engine. Any problems or issues your Si may have had, would be the same as an SIR. They are generally a reliable car as long as it was maintained.

I would definately do a Carfax and Car Proof history, make sure the UVIP is accurate, service history and any bills from repairs and maintenance. I'm sure there are plenty of them floating around that may be a fake SIR or a theft recovery.

I would rather buy a cheaper, high k, one owner SIR that has been maintained, but might need a little TLC. I've seen plenty of low k, modded, over priced ones.

Ya, I am essentially scared of my car getting stolen. But there's something about the 99-00 model that just can't keep me away. If I can't have a 99-00 civic si/r I would want something high class and considering I'm young and still in university, I can't afford a high-class vehicle yet.

The biggest fear I have about SiR is a friend of mine keeps telling me that SiR are raced like crazy so I wanted to know what to look for to make sure the engine is good. Thanks.

Watch for blue smoke out the exhaust when you punch it. Thats big red flag.

Mine burns a little oil (maybe a litre between oil changes) but this is normal for a b16a2. Most will burn a little, don't worry about that because thats not a sign of abuse. Noticable blue smoke out the exhaust is. Listen for engine noise, valve train chatter, rod bearing knocking... the usual. Some b16's do have a little valve train chatter, that is normal as well.

Also, if you're worried about it being stolen, install a hidden fuel pump switch. They'll be able to break in and try to start the car, but it ain't going anywhere.
