Buying a eg hatch with b16a2
 

Looking at buying a eg hatch with a 2000 b16a2, the only thing is that there is no vin's on the trans, or the motor. What could be done to see if it is legit or not? Any help is appreciated. Would a recepit from the place he got the motor from and installed be of any help?

Receipt is useless if there are no vins on the motor and tranny to confirm it, do i think its likely stolen? Yes I do because god knows alot of those engines are stolen, with that said I wouldnt worry to much because if the numbers are gone and there are no other markings on the engine that the police can I.D. it from then I wouldnt worry.

Are the vin's scratched out? Or can you just not find them? If the vin's actually aren't there I would say it's stolen. Don't bother with the car man

the rivits for the vins have been drilled out. The seller looks like a honest guy, but i don't know.

Maybe the owner of the car was an idiot and didn't check the vin's on the engine. Nevertheless, people can put on acts, don't buy the car, it is impossible to identify the engine, which means it is more than likely stolen.

he may not know it was stolen. if he bought the engine from some guy or shop. thats why cars go missing and don't come back cause some people are really good at what they do. chances are the engine is good, so no worries, right? cops won't do anything. i don't think its likely there is a case for a stolen engine or let alone a stolen car. thats what insurance is for... write-offs and lazy cops.

I asked the seller to provide a receipt for the motor and install. I know that when a registered shop buys a motor or trans from a registered dealer the vin number is usually recorded on the bill of sale from the dealer to the shop. From my experience the parts dealers pull off the vin plates too?? Don't know why though. I asked the seller to get a vin from the shop, so if i get a vin i'll run the vin and if it's an sir and it's not stolen then is the motor good? But if it's not a vin from a sir then i guess the motor is stolen, if no vin is availalbe then i don't know :confused:
I don't know how cops would be able to match up the motors anyways without the vin tags.

thats what i am saying. maybe get a compression test on it or something from honda... i think its like 80 or something to do. if it checks out and the engine runs, whats the big deal where it came from? if it didn't work well, then i would be concerned, but if it does, then great! i would buy it if the price is right!

the big deal is if you get caught with a stolen engine the cops can take your car. Now that might not be an issue with this car since you have no way in recognizing the engine, but I still find it funny how the vins aren't there. Why would it be taken off? Did you ask the seller why there weren't any vin #s on the engine?

seller does not know why the vin's are missing, he did not even know where they were when i initally asked him.

What about a recipt from the shop he purchased it from with the serial number of the block on the receipt? I don't think the shop would put themselves on the line if it was stolen?

Ive known people to remove vins because they want to keep what kind of engine they are running a secret.

b16a2 came from a 99-00 SIR or SI (american)

that being said now think about all the amount of people that are running around with a b16a2 in the eg's hatch's, coupes, ef's etc...

now for a motor to be legit there had to be a reason for it to come out of a 2000 HONDA CIVIC SIR. ie. accident, or the person wanted more power from the car so he/she decided to swap for something better. other then that there is NO other reason.

that being said lets say for the 99 and 00 SIR only 1000 were built in North america how many of those are bought by people who modify cars? say 40 percent which would make it 400. how many of those car's out of the 400 do you think would ever get a bigger or better motor? say 10 percent that would mean 100.

now my point here is that if only 100 motors are being taken out legit and only say 1 or 2 SIR's get into an accident per 2 months (i am saying this based on auction reports) that means there arent too many b16a2 on the market available legit.

So if every tom dick and harry that mods cars has a b16a2 that means something is wrong doesnt it? because now demand outweigh's supply. So whats the alternative? STEAL.

so chances are your motor is stolen.

I got some information from the po-po and they suggested that i bring the car down to the station for them to look at and determine whether it is stolen or not. Not a clue at how they would know.

dun worry bout it so much, if it runs fine then its all good, if u do get pulled over n they beleive its stolen, then the person who sold it to u would get ****ed.....juss be like i bought the car like tat, make him sign a list of mods he has done to the car....

just buy the car if the price is right... tons of motors are stolen nowadays, if you find one not stolen, then you got a great find... just make that seller sign a paper indicating all the mods came with the car the way it is when he sell it to you... and take some pics if you can... if you ever do get pull and they said ur engine is stolen, just tell them you bought the car like this and you know nothing about it and bring the paper and pics up if needed... the chance of engine checking won't be high... unless you drive like a dick.... cops just love to give out exhaust tickets....

bud, if it runs buy it, if it doesnt then dont. and dont even bother going to cops or anything way to much hassle.
