Buying a car from the USA...

What would be the safest way to pay the person and how do u drive it back without a plate or do u take the US plate?

Also does the border really need 48hrs notice or can u register it once in canada

Many threads on this procedure over at redflagdeals.com ... you usually can get temp plate from dealer in the US to allow you to drive to the border. The dealer should fax the export paperwork to the Queenston--Lewiston bridge at least 48 hrs before you are going to import the car. Get that paperwork on the US side before you cross the bridge into Canada. Pay your GST and other duties if applicable. Get car checked by certified garage, have any mods done, and then register with MTO..pay PST and your done. You also need a letter from manufacturer that any recalls on the vehicle have been done.

Check out the RIV.ca website to find out what forms you will need to import. You will probably have to find out from a similar US site what paperwork they require and have the current owner fill out and submit, or get vehicle and take a vacation for 48 hrs and submit yourself. You will have to contact a dealer for whatever vehicle you are importing to get that recall letter. What are you trying to import anyways, please don't say BMW..

Just heard that BMW can be one of the most expensive to import. Dealer inspections only and thousands of dollars in costs. Good luck on your vette.
