Be aware that you must have proof of liability insurance if you are operating it on any property other than your own.

You'll also want to read up on the Offroad Vehicles Act. Be very aware of where you can and cannot operate the thing. The Offroad Vehicles Act and the Trespass to Property Act gives property owners very broad powers to stop, detain, and even arrest you if they find you on their property. http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/DBLaws/S...sh/90o04_e.htm

Good thing. A lot of people just go for the toy factor and forget all about there being legalities involved.

For trails, if you're up camping in the Algonquin area, Top of the Mountain tours is an hour's driver east of the park. It offers a big selection of trails in a historically interesting area, and are open most of the year so you can all-season it if you want.

Best part is that they also rent atvs, so if you have atv-less friends, you can them on a machine to join you for a day's run.

Oh, and one more thing...

Mosport gets suggested on the ATV and off-road riding boards as place to go. Lawrence Yap of the Toronto Star even once suggested it in a column.

But don't be tempted. Mosport has track staff there whose job it is to look for off-road vehicles trespassiing on their property. When they see you, they quietly wait or follow until you're stopped for whatever reason or in a choke point on whatever trail you're on, and then before you know it they've cabled and locked your atv or dirtbike to a tree.

The next step is handling over of your ID, and then that long walk to go get your tow vehicle. On occasion they've been known to let you push the thing off the property, though I don't know if that's doing you a favouror not considering the sand, hills, and muck. If you object, they simply call the police to issue you a Provinical Offence Notice to pay a fine or appear in court.

I once saw just ONE of their staff nail SEVEN quads all by himself as they tried to come out of a swamp. He just waited until they were almost out, then block the exit and cabled the lead atv. Because of the muckiness of the swamp they were now stopped in, the others couldn't easily turn around to go escape, so they all ended up staying put until their presence on the property was dealt with.

And it's all perfectly legal, even if you got there by "accident", real or feigned.

That's why I suggested being aware of the legalities.

As a person who lives near, went mountain biking and off roading around the area, this is pretty much fact in what Mark speaks.

Used to take my old banshee off roading around Mosport 10 years ago but things are a little different these days.
