Question Anyone own a 97+ Prelude? inform me

I've been thinking lately I'd like to sell the civic and get a 5th gen prelude. I'm just wondering if anyone here also owns one, and any experience they have had with it. Mostly is it just as reliable as a civic, maintenance and any problem areas, how's gas...they always strike me as honda's distant cousin.

I've read a bunch of reviews and what not, but i'd like to hear from someone with first hand experience.

and I'd be looking for the base model, not the one with ATTS..I dont think I need that option.

1.) Gas is more expensive. Not overly, but it will add up, but thats the price you pay
2.) Its just as reliable as a civic IMO. As long as you do regular maintenance on it, and dont drive it like you stole it you should have no problems, but parts are more expensive when things do break. Its not like a D series where trannies are $100

Get the base model, it comes pretty much standard with all you want. Power everything, heated seats, mirrors, sunroof etc.

ATTS is ok when it works, but IMO much better to have a tranny with LSD, and if the ATTS unit goes its some $$ to fix.

Depending on how the car was run before you might have oil consumption, and you might have very little, it depends on car to car, so get used to checking your oil all the time.

Be nice to the tranny, syncros tend to go easily on them specially 3rd gear from banging gears at high rpm.

Take that into consideration and you should be fine.

I'd expect gas to roughly be about an extra $10/week (I drive 200km a week or so). Not a big hit...and I usually drive pretty calm (shifting around 3k or less). I would take the same approach to buying a prelude as i did to the civic. That would be getting it private off a mature driver with low clicks (no modifications)

Im torn between spending money on a swap/paint...or just take that 'mod' money and put it toward a newer car.

anyone else have experience with the ludes?

well whats your final goal? do you wana go fast? great handling? etc

doing it in the civic will be much cheaper

but if you just want a daily driver thats fun and peppy the lude is pretty good for that.

Im not saying its impossible, but expect to spend alot more. Its not like the civic where you can find a huge assortment of front lips for your car for $100

on the lude... well good luck, and if you do expect to pay $$

But first you have to decide 100% what you want to do before you even think about buying another car.

the car I would like to build it just a fun daily driver. The mod list would just be basic things. Probably just lower it. I might look into future engine mods, however...the prelude seems to move fast enough to make me happy.

But I figure right now with my civic i'm looking at body/paint work(~$1500)...B16 swap (~$3000)...then misc stuff that i bet would total another $2000. The civic has low km's and i've been offered 5000 for it.

I'm just thinking a prelude would cost about the same as what I want to do to the civic...except, I would have a newer car with all those fancy things like heated seats

my concern is just how much more will it cost me (not to mod, but to run)

very true. I remember about a year and a half ago when I bought my civic, 4th gen ludes were going anywhere from 5000 to 8000! ridiculous

anyway, i'll keep thinking it through. The reason i say i would buy after winter is because by then i will have saved enough $$ to make a decision what way im leaning and where i want to spend my money.

just throwing ideas up in the air
