Anyone have experience with USED car dealerships and their 2 year warranties?

Hi,

Just wondering if I should trust a used car dealership with their warranties? My parents found an 1998 Audi A4 but I've been told they are a money pit and costly to repair and maintain.

But this dealership told us not to worry because they will cover the engine and tranny for up to 2 years!

Anyone have experience with these used car dealerships and their warranties?

I'm sure it sounds good but will they really honour it after 1 1/2 when the tranny goes? I'm just really iffy!

Usually the way those warranties are structured is so that the deductible is quite high so you end up paying for a lot, and it doesn't cover everything, just some things. But it depends on the warranty, nobody can definitively say it is good or bad until they actually have read over the specific one you are talking about.

I have also heard that A4's are money pits, and there was an article in the Star about a month or two ago about that.

I asked what it covers once for a civic, and realized after about 2 minutes on the phone it dosen't cover as much as you'd believe. Ask carefully what it does and does not cover and don't accept any gaps.

They will cover the engine means probably piston rings, if it throws a rod but thats about it. These shady shops, make it sound good, but I personally don't put any faith in their warranties.

Anyone can say 2 year warranty on engine, then when it blows a rod turn around and say, wow, you reved it so high it blew...user error not our problem. Stupid, but remember these asses are the insurance salesmen type people of the automotive vehicle world...so in other words, pure ****ing scum

I dunno but i think it could mean trouble and money.

Usually the warranty they include is the basic one (i am talking about lubrico warranties here) but if you talk to them, for extra cash they can upgrade the warranty, which will pretty much cover everything, expect to pay close to a 1000 for the upgrade though, dont know if its worth it for that car.

^ no they're not.. I got one and it only covers the block.. plus if anything happens you have to pay out of pocket and then send the receipts in and wait for reimbursement and hope they don't give you some bs as to why they can't cover it

i honestly think the warranties are CRAP - i learned after i bought my Neon and my 02 Vic - nothing happened with the car until my warranty was up!

but i learned my lesson with my Neon
1900 bucks for Gold warranty - 40000kms or 2 years ur gonna hit one first and thats the K's

if ur gonna buy a Lemon -> then buy warranty! but if your mecanically inclined.. -> i wouldnt bother!

p.s German cars are expensive to repair... im glad the dealership at VW never got back to me about the VR6 i was inquiring so i got my SIR and i was happy with my choice... i still wish i could of found a TYPE R...

Well what I'm gonna do is inquire about this guy's 2 year warranty and see what it covers.

Here's the car btw:

DON'T BUY THEM!!! they cover engine and tranny, nothign else, no electrical. or anything outside of it. and unless you go to an approved shop, then you pay out of pocket and wait for reimbursement. you can upgrade it... but why? buy a car you KNOW will run fine. buy a honda, toyota, etc. they won't do anything wrong to you. my car was offered with one of those and i just said deduct it from the price.
VW and AUDI can for the most part, ONLY BE REPAIRED WITH VW OR AUDI PARTS!! which are VERY expensive because they have a monopoly on the parts for these cars and therefore can charge ANYTHING they want. and ELECTRICAL is the biggest thing on these cars. the coil pack is a huge one, about 800 to fix minimum.
so tell your parents to save their pennies and buy a new audi. or buy a newer honda/toyota. ask any mechanic, they will tell you. unless they are ignorant. my uncle is owns a few shops and i almost bought a VW, he told me explicitly to stay away from german cars. HE told me to buy honda or toyota. respect his opinion or not. your parents will regret the decision. look at EDMUNDS.COM and look at reviews
sorry for the novel.
