Anyone get their cracked manifold welded?

Alright so I have an 00 Civic, and as well all know the D16Y7s like to crack manifolds. Thing is, due to their design (with the cat and the manifold being one piece) they are quite pricy...

Wreckers have them for $250, buying used (on kijiji etc) you can find uncracked ones for $150. That's still a little more than I'd like to drop on a stock D16 that's supposed to be my moneysaver/beater engine, especially when you consider the fact that there's a pretty damn good chance that used one will crack down the road and 2 months later there's your $250 down the drain..

I read about some people just welding them, anyone have any experience with that? It would seem like a great solution if the weld actually holds up. I'm not sure how much it costs to have it welded, but I would imagine around $40-50ish if you just take off the mani yourself and bring it to them.

So yeah, anyone know a shop that would do that or have another solution for this? I'm trying to take care of this problem within $100..

Thanks.

If you can get that welded, good. I had the same problem with my stock manifold on my D17. Instead of getting a new manifold (mine couldn't be welded for some reason), i got a header and an aftermarket cat. I ended up with a bit more power and a better sound for half of what a new manifold would have been. The problem is that it was out of your budget (I payed $350).

Have you run your car on the emissions machine since you did the replacement?

^ It should pass... I've seen many people put aftermarket cats like the Magnaflow universals and got them welded on and passed without a problem.

I did, it passed with flying colours. I actually did get the Magnaflow universal. Actually, after I turbo'd, it still passes emissions. I'm not sure how.

all the EK's have that problem with them. I have welded them up before, but they do end up cracking again.

My wife's crapy kia has a similar manifold with the cat integrated. Long story short, it cracked near the bottom just above the flange and I welded it back up. So far so good.

Think of it this way: you can keep buying stock mani's that will crack soon after replacement for $150 a pop (or what ever), or you can spend a little more on a cheap header and high flow cat that will last you WAY longer and save you money down the road...

Agreed, and I believe in doing things right the first time for most things but honestly if it comes down to it I would rather just drive with it like this than waste $350+ on a stock D16. I even still get good gas mileage like this. The only reason I want to fix it at all is because I don't like having a CEL. That's honestly the only reason. I am throwing a code for o2 sensor but I think the sensor is good it's just the crack that's causing it to get a bad reading.

Someone offered to sell me their welded one for $50, I'm gonna buy it and if it cracks I'll just drive it like this and put the $350 towards an LS/GSR swap..

Thanks for the advice though everyone..
