let the kid dream would ya! so he is fortunate enough to have parents willing to help. let him have fun, after all thats what being young is all about. he has time to get old when he is in his mid twenties and then he will have a slick car that he can drive to his job that will give him money to buy a house.
that is a good option if you are the type of person who can follow through on a long term project and only you know that.

yes, that's what i'm going for....
I think of it more as a hobby, to do a project car.... the best fact of all I forgot who mentioned it, was that if I do mess anything up I still have my daily driver...... does km's matter if it's just the shell of the car, i'm replacing anything anyway.. yes I know it will be more expenisve then just buying a car, but it's the pride factor... you can buy a computer for 1000, or you can build the same one for... 1300, I rather build, cause you know what everything is and how everything works you know all your parts and you take your time to put it together.. that's what I want to do with the car, know everything about it... have everything the way I want it.. like everyone else does some people put bodykits on it, some have skirts some have nothing it's all personal taste.. I want it to be my own. I think it would be fun also, I can do enough my self.., my best bud is taking auto mechanics in durham college, which should be a bit helpful to me.. and my girlfriend offered to help me if I decided to do this...

One of the main things to consider in building a project car is to remember there is no ROI(Return on Investment)
If you can fathom giving away "X" amount of $$$ instead of investing into a $$$ making propostion AND it won't hurt you financially anywhere else, by all means go for it.
I say this cuz in retrospect, I've spent too much $$$ on my car which is now almost 13 years old. I'd be lucky to get half of what I put into it, out of it. I don't mean to influence your decision in either choice, just want to show you the reality of things. Best of luck to you.

If you're planning on doing all the work yourself and make it a real learning process, more power to you. I say you find a car with a good body on it and don't worry so much about mileage.
Remember, in order to do the right work, you gotta have the right tools. The right tools make a job much easier, but they aren't cheap.
Start now and you'll have something to be proud of in no time. Just remember to research and do things right the first time.

People who have constant flow of cash will have no trouble of spending money on their hobbies. Be it cars, sports, stamp collection, whatever.
A hobbie sometimes does not tie itself with "return values". It is something you do on your spare time, a time killer. If it is a hobbie to you, then money will be no object as you will be spending money accordingly based on your income(s) and expenses. You have spare cash, you work on the car and buy stuff. You have no cash, you stop buying parts or look for freebies. But whatever you do, the first thing that comes to your mind is not "how much money I am going to lose on this car" or "how much money am I going to make off of this one."
As soon as money gets involved, then it becomes a job.

that's the thing I don't have a worry about cash flow.... and I don't plan to get the money I put into the car back.
v8hunter03 - I want to get something better, yes there is better but I know all regert not getting a civic, something about the look... it's an economy car that is so sexy, frig... get any civic drop it 1.5 inches put a front lip on it and it's sexy, I was thinking about getting a prelude, 240sx etc. etc.. but I just like the look of a 99-00 civic more... yea of course not more then a supra, or my all time fav R34 skyline... but that's way out there lol
any other comments? suggestions? yadada?

Another day dreamer at work.
I'm also looking for a project, but I don't know what I want.
First I thought I want to built an engine for my SiR to run on around 20psi of boost. ($10G)
Next was to get a RHD del sol b16 vtec
After that was RHD newer Toyota MR2
Next is an old MG convertable (still).
Today's new idea is I can get a B18C (blown) and built that up to handle 20psi+ of boost. Again another $10G ish
Honestly I need to buy a HOUSE before any of my project ideas get off the ground.

but, right there you said it. If you buy a "project car" how do you expect to do any work on it? You're getting in way over your head. Plus if you read through a alot of threads on HT or here, A LOT of the info is either wrong or half truths. I'm 18, and trust me once you hit university your car will just be a pain in the a$$ you have to put money into. Well gas/insurance is the pain...but looks like your set for that..take the alero

yeah buddy, I think you are looking for more trouble than you even know.
I started out with old beaters, always working on them not cuz I wanted to but because I had to - they were always breaking down. I've had about.... man between 15-20 cars.... and only 75% of the cars I didn't pay more than a $1000 for them. That's the best way to learn, buy cars for a few hundred bux, drive them and work on them. When they break down you try to fix them, if you screw up you sell them and you never lose more then $1000. It's really a great system. A project car you can spend $15,000 on, and it still doesn't guarantee that you will finish it.
