Alright confused...

here's what's going on

i'm gonna be driving a 99 alero for 1-2 years it will be given to me..

I was thinking of getting a 92-95 civic, because i like the way it looks and there cheap...

I rather have a 96-00 model, because I personally think they look better but are more money

So, I was thinking to buy a 96-00 shell, peferably 99-00, and start a project car.. except I don't know if this is right for me, I do know a deal about parts and everything else... but I haven't realy worked on a car before, I know more knowledge then that stuff.. so i'm wondering if anyone did this and would it be a good option for me.

Thanks

FYI, reason why i don't buy a full car is lump sum out of my pocket and i'm only 17, and my parents are paying for gas, insurance... so..... I will just be saving

I need a civic it's not a want it's a need

get whatever you like best first, don't buy something because its cheaper only to regret it. You have a car now so take your time and do it right.

Theres no better way to learn to work on cars then by reading and doing, and asking questions. At least this way if you screw up no big deal as you still have a daily driver.

I think if you buy a ek shell its going to cost you more than just buying a ek, plus you have to go to mechcanics and pay labour and all that.. and you will really have to learn about all the parts so you dont get ripped off.
If you cant afford an ek then just go for eg...
Im not sure you said youll be driving your alero for 1-2 years.
do you mean that you want to sell that alero and get a ek/eg right away or did u mean after 1-2 years you want to get a ek/eg?
If your going to wait 1-2 years why bother asking now? wait and see what you can afford.
If your talking about right now, you could always stick with what you have, or sell it (not sure how much its worth) and get eg/ek depending on how much you sell it for.
You could always buy a eg and swap sir motor into it.
Its all up to you and your money saved, and you could sell that alero and then you will have a lump sum.

May I ask why a civic is a need and not a want?.. most people at your age want just a car dont need a car. I mean your getting a free car, you can just stick with it, dont be so picky on it and use it and when you can buy your own car, get what you want. In no way am I trying to steer you away from a civic though

and for reference..if you do not know
eg- 92-95
ek- 96-00

you are young.
a car isn't something you really need to INVEST in. and i CAP invest because cars are nothing but bottomless money pits. insurance, gas, maintenence/parts. cars will degrade MUCH MUCH faster in years.

instead save up for a house thats a REAL investment. and will actually pay off in years to come depending on where you purchase.

unless you have money to blow which it doesnt seem like you do, ride the parents car for as long as they possibly let you.

everyone knows cars are not the best thing to invest in and 95% of them don't do it to make money off of, people buy and do up cars so they can say it's their own and have somthing to be proud of

eg and ek are JDM cars, we don't get those here . you're lucky, i'm 17 too, i bought my own car, pay for my own insurance and gas. that's why i went with an EH, they're cheaper on insurance by a bit.

if i have my own car... then I have to pay for all the stuff.....
car/insurance... i don't think gas though

if i did buy a project car it wouldn't cost gas...or insurance.. maybe fire and theft and it would give me something to do.

I was still taking the buses when I was 17.

If you really like this hobbie, then why not? Start early and learn a thing or two about it. No harm.

all cars are a want not a need. you need food and shelter for the elements and clothing ... you don't need a car.

there's other means of getting around

a car is a liability just remember that
