Advice on VW transmission
A friend of mine just called me and her 1995 auto VW Golf CL with 175,000 kms is in the shop.
Apparently her transmission is failing, she was told the torque convertor was going. She admitted she only changed the automatic transmission fluid once.
Right now the car is apart and the transmission is out.
She was told it would $3000 to get the necessary parts and rebuild the transmission. The value of the car is $5-6000.
Does anyone have suggestions?
I thought it would be more cost effective to try and source a used tranny and have that installed, but I have only dealt with honda parts and do not know how much a VW tranny would cost.
Or perhaps even taking the 3000 and trading in her VW and getting something a little newer.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

My friend, I think it's time for a civic....
To me it doesn't make much sense to spend that much on a car that old with that many kilometres on it.
I can only see someone doing that to a car where they have huge sentimental attchments. I don't think it's worth it!
Hope that helps.

$3k is a lot of money, especially when the car is only worth $5k-$6k. I say that it's either time for a new car, or source the tranny from someplace else.
Put the $3k into a savings account and then use it towards a newer car! Maybe a newer Golf??
