Acura 1.7 EL ... Your opinion Please
#23
Clearly I'm biased on this subject, but I say get the EL.
I myself own a 1.6 EL, and love it. The EL's come with a lot of nice luxury features you won't find on the Civic and I find the build quality to be a step above the already good quality of the Civic sedan. As for power, the EL (either 1.6 or 1.7) has more than any of the comparable year Civic sedans, but unfortunately no DOHC motors. If you are looking for a new 03+ 1.7 EL, you can also get one brand new off the lot with nice skirt/spoiler package if you go for the aero package 1.7 EL. Basically, it all comes down to what you want out of a car. If you are looking for a to build a race car of some sort, this is not the car for you, but if you want a car with some luxury features, 4 doors, and decent power, then the EL is right car for you.
BTW, if you want more info on the EL, check out www.clubel.ca
Just my 2 cents.

Speculation...yes it is, officially there is no plan announced for a 2.0 EL, but if you are interested and don't need a new car right away I'd suggest waiting a couple of months, at least until 2004 MY is announced...

I like the new 1.7.. its very comfy, but not sporty at all. the vtec is nothing more than a little buzzing sound and vibration in the steering wheel and pedals.
but agreed with what most other people said.. if you have plans to mod then stick with a 6th-gen platform. I don't think you'll get 'noticed' as much in the 1.7, aero package or not. good luck!

Since the 1.7 EL has the same engine as a Civic Si coupe, then you'll probably be happy with it since you don't want anything crazy fast.
I think that the EL's look much better than Civic sedans so it may also fulfill your criteria of a good looking sedan. And by going for an 1.7 EL, you're staying in the Honda family which is always a good thing!!
Go out and test drive one!! I'm sure that you'll find the engine peppier than the one in your Civic LX and it won't guzzle gas either. You may find the more luxurious accomodations in the EL more to your liking and immediately want to buy one!! Good luck.

I just picked up a 1.6 el, and basically I love it. I went from a second gen RX7 that had a 13 sec quarter, and that car got me nothing but trouble. I like the fact that I can roll with leather and just have some show, instead of go. Honeslty it might just be a classy civic, but it leaves you with the inpression that your in a expensive car, Go for it!

I know this may sound way out, but if I was looking for a decent sedan for that kind of money, I would seriously consider a 2003 Accord (of course looks are very subjective and you may think it is fugly). I know it is a Honda and not an Acura but it feels more substantial. I have driven the 1.7/1.6 EL, Si (7th gen) , SiR (6th and 7th gen) and Accord (previous and '03). IMO, going with an LX Accord 4 cylinder, you have "more" car for about the same amount of money. I think insurance might be cheaper on the Accord to boot. It doesn't hurt to look at it. Trust me, you get a different opinion of the car after you sit in it.

Mark you're the second person to tell me to look at the accord. I think the two door accord is beautiful, but it's too big of a car for me. I was told I keep test driving the wrong cars and I'll change my mind once I test drive and accord. The 4 cylinder accord is the same engine as the civic Sir too. yeah the base model is the same price as the 1.7 and not that much more for the upgraded one. I just keep thinking it's family carish. With the right body kit I guess it could look otherwise.
Thank you all for your suggestions and opinions it has been helpful.
What do other people think of the "newly redesigned" accord

I believe the civic is 1.7 except for the civic Sir which is 2.0. I like the size of all of the civics including the 1.7. The new accord is nice but maybe a little too big.. I like the compact car.
