ABS is for 99% of drivers out there...

including Kieran

most people outthere don't understand how to modulate their brakes to slow down quicker.... they don't respond to pedal feel and general feelings of wheels locking up

see 99% of drivers don't realize that you have to use more then your eyes to know what the car is doing. you have to drive feeling the feedback in the pedals and steering wheel and your ***. your eyes just should point to where you want to go ... everything else should be done by feel

thats what i tried to tell him... Im not saying ABS are a bad thing. I think they were a great idea, i just think that they are for a person that panics rather then thinks. I have had the chance to drive both in winter conditions and i can control the car better without abs. If you buy ure first car with abs, then you will depend on it for the rest of your driving career. When i bought my civic, it had power nothing. Not having power steering and ABS and all that crap has made me a better driver then someone that went out and bought a car with all those power options as their first car.

motti... I think you're looking at it the wrong way. me... I see ABS as a $1500 option. and ppl buy that option. and that's fine. and then 2 years later when it's time for tires, ppl buy cheap tires this is where I get proper pissed!!! ugh!!! the investment in safety is #1 tires, and #2 shocks (to keep tires on the road) and #3 driving lessons (or a lil common sense physics about weight transfer).

I seen 4 cars spin out on an offramp where I normally just fly through. The mistake... where I stay on the gas with confidence, they lifted sukaz lol Lil true knowledge goes a long way.

oh and ABS that kicks in way too soon totally sux0rz!! sometimes when you count on that lil bit of extra rotation and the ABS cuts out your fun... that's where it gets dangerous cuz you've already adjusted your driving to a lil skid. that is if you're not driving your own car tho. If it's your own car, you should know your threshold already and should drive accordingly.

Damn.

A lot of people have no facking clue what ABS does.

If you can't use your car's ABS properly and with precision, learn how to drive.

ABS steps in when your wheels lock up. Guess what? That means that you've already messed up in 99.9% of situations. The remaining 0.1% of situations where you locked your wheels on purpose have no place on a public street. If you actually knew how to drive you wouldn't be able to tell if a car had ABS, and thus wouldn't care, since you wouldn't be locking your wheels.

The only place where ABS hurts you on the street is emergency stopping on gravel or snow. First of all, you should be driving more carefully if you're on a road in that condition. Secondly, if you actually understood how the ABS system works, you'd realize that you can still lock your wheels in that situation. It's just that most people don't know how, or don't have the composure to do it in a stressful situation.

I don't ever brake hard enough on dry pavement for ABS to kick in, so it really doesn't affect me. The only time it does come on is in the winter when the roads are slippery; this is where I like it to come on. I don't track my car (yet) and don't plan to any time soon, nor do I ever take turns at speeds that require me to stomp on the brakes to get through the corner.

I have been in a hatch when it slammed on the brakes to avoid a rear end collision and it stopped very well (Kumho MX tires helped))

My advice to you, Beyaz, is that if you are going to drive your car year round on public roads within the confines of the law, then ABS is a good thing.

ABS is a personal preference for people, some like it, some hate it, what u should do john is try out both and see if you like it. Everyone here has different driving styles and different ways of thinking. Some things you need to figure out yourself.

to me, anything that detracts from mechanical feedback from the car is a negative... soft susp, soft steering, tall sidewall tires, soft sloppy seats, crappy cable shifters, poor visibility, and any electronic intervention from the car's systems (rev limiter, ABS, speed limiter, traction control, auto trannies, etc etc etc...)

unfortunately I've seen it so many times when ppl just straight screw up that I'm glad most cars have safety systems in place. God forbid I share the road with the drivers we DO have... and NO safety systems. I'd be scared. Personally, I think if I screw up then I just wasn't focused and I deserve to eat it. So yeah... I try to take off things like airbags, seatbelts and so on... I replace those with Simpson harnesses (used properly, the airbag would just be stupid to have when you have harnesses), and I keep my car it top condition. I get the best tires I can, I have massive 4 piston brakes, the best suspension I could think up... and all of 107 D16Y7 insipred horsepower lol

ABS in general is a good addition on vehicle for safety reasons. Doesn't matter if a person doesn't know how to drive or not.. Wouldn't you prefer the idiot not knowing to drive to have anything possible to protect him/her from smashing into YOU?

Some people say just pump your brakes, well good luck pumping your brakes as fast as ABS does.

For the most part you can easily drive without ABS, hell I have been for the last 7 years. I remember the worst times back when I delivered pizzas. I did 300-400KM a DAY in an integra with no ABS..

As some have said, "I didn't like ABS until it saved my *** one day." No matter how good a driver you are, there will always be a situation that catches you off guard.

ABS doesn't shorten stopping distances, it just allows you to steer while you 'lock' up your brakes.

What I hate is on ice/freezing rain, when the ABS kicks in and you back outta the pedal, for a split second the brake pedal feels like crap. Sometimes in the diesel, since the engine has such high compression, when you downshift in slick conditions, the tires slip just from downshifting alone (not even touching the brakes). Cases like that you really just gotta back off in the same gear w/o downshifting and use engine braking alone, no brakes till the engine is almost at idle, then clutch and apply brakes.

Too many ppl rely on ABS and so on to save them... that's why in the winter time 401 ditches are just jam packed with SUVs and minivans.

You haven't been driving very long, have you? People have been landing in the 401 ditches long before ABS was a twinkle in some engineer's eye.

AGAIN..we blame technology..the problem is not abs or not having it..its the dumb drivers that think driving is all about getting in a car and pushing the brakes or gas pedal...

This issue is not whether ABS is good or bad. The issue is that with all new tech people just don't know how to use it.

The first time a person feels there ABS engaged ther first reaction is to let go of the brake pedal.

Let go of the brake get into accident.

I,ve been driving 18 years, stick, auto, standard brakes and steering. Nothing will prepare you for what is going to happen to the guy beside you.
